I had a very similar problem in late summer doing what you describe but then all was good. On the trip south in late October our brakes acted as you tell and the problem was a bare wire in the axle tub hitting the axle off and on and more on than off until no trailer brakes. Easy fix at an alpenlite dealer in Stockton Ca. Now we have the wire zip tied to the back of the Axle on the outside. That was 16 years ago and no problems.
