Proper Winter Storage

We own a 2002 F-350 long bed dually that we use primarily to pull our 37’ 5th wheel for camping trips. Other than that is rarely used transport building material for home projects and take winter leaves to the local land fill.

There is a 97 gallon gravity feed external fuel tank in the bed of the truck. Last winter was colder than usual on the mid-east coast and when we tried to start up this past spring we had to charge the battery and there was a large amount of water in the fuel.

Right now there is about ½ tank of fuel in the primary tank, external tank is empty. We plan this winter to take the truck out for about a 20 mile drive every 2 weeks.

What else should we do over the winter, should we store it with the external tank full or empty? We use fuel additives, what do you consider the best additive for winter storage?
  • During the winter I rarely drive my truck, then only when the roads are dry, maybe once a month 27 miles to work and back. From my understanding no trips are better than a short trip.
I too use the battery tender and I'm putting one on a friend's truck this weekend.
I let the aux tank go empty and just fuel up the OEM tank full as possible, avoiding < 3/4 tank.

  • As soon as my DD is back from the mechanic, the dually is going in the barn for the winter.

It will get an oil change, a big glug of fuel stabilizer, and a battery maintainer.

I fill my tank (I would recommend Shell or BP diesel, never had a water issue) with additive and Stabil Diesel stabilizer. No issues in the spring.

I also use a Battery Tender plugged in all winter. Battery tender

Again, no issues in starting in the spring. Been using Battery Tenders on my various stored vehicles for over 10 years.
  • I use a Battery Tender Jr. on my Suburban. Stored Nov-Apr. I change the oil shortly before storage, make sure it is washed and drive it 30 miles home from work and park it hot with a full tank of fuel with Stabil in it. I do not have a diesel but mostly the same would apply. Air in your fuel tanks will have moisture in it which will end up in the fuel. Once I park it hot, I don't start it till spring.
  • I do about the same as you: store the truck under cover from November through April. Before I fill both tanks I add some fuel stabilizer, just for that warm fuzzy feeling really, I'm not convinced it does much but it couldn't hurt.

A few years I've hooked up a trickle charger, but didn't this last winter and the batteries were down a bit. The truck started okay, but turned over really slow. So I'm hooking up a trickle charger again this year.
  • Fill the tanks up, put a trickle charger on the batteries, and let it sit til spring. If you are driving it 20 miles every 2 weeks just to "keep it fresh" then you are wasting time and money.
