Not required on non-commercial vehicles.
IF you have them and have an annual State equipment
inspection law requirement, they all must work in
order to pass inspection.
Apparently added "back in the day" to give
that Big Rig look and appeal.
No, wrong...they are required on vehicles wide than 80", and not required on vehicles narrower than 80". Commercial or not has nothing to do with it! - JarlaxleExplorer II

As far as I know, any vehicle with a body width of over 80" requires them. That's why the F150 Raptor and the Hummer H2 have them. Not sure about weight requirements, but most 250/2500s and SRW 350/3500s I've seen do not have them. They are an option, at least they were when my dad bought his 2000 F250.
This. Note also that GM Quadrasteer trucks needed them. - Gonecamping444ExplorerI just got a 2015 2500 Chevy Silverado with roof lights,I like them,Just happen to be on the truck I wanted.
- wtdExplorerMy 98 K3500 regular cab long bed single rear wheel truck has factory cab lights. I like cab lights and installed factory lights on my 98 Ext-cab Z71 K1500 back in 2003.
Wayne - gtsumExplorerI wanted them in my 14 3500 when i ordered it but wife talked me out of it. Said it would look too "red". Wish I would have got them:(
- buckyExplorer IIGreat question Rick, but the truck was a 99 K2500 Sub. I was disappointed when they discontinued the 4 wheel steering, I thought it was a great idea. I'm not sure if they offered it on the 2500 however. My truck was the body style before that option was available.

It was my understanding that width-based clearance light requirement applies to the Ford Raptor and the Hummer H1, not the Tahoe-based H2. But, I've been wrong before.
I Googled it just to make sure I wasn't yet again putting my foot in my mouth, yes the H2 does have clearance lighting. I had forgotten that the Raptor has the lights in the grill, not on the roof.
Yep, my H2 is a wide gal. She has the lights required. - IndyCampExplorer

I've NEVER seen them on ANY 2500 truck...but again, you could ORDER them for the truck.
Well, here is the dealer I was shopping (not where I eventually bought) and here are the 2500 trucks currently on their lot that have the roof lights:

Now, this dealer is in farm country in Indiana, so maybe that makes a difference, but I don't think it is at all unusual to see the roof lights on 2500 trucks.
Yes, the dealer obviously ordered them that way, but I find it odd that you are a "hauler" and you have "NEVER" seen them on "ANY" 2500 truck. - hyattjlbbExplorerBut again, if you have the "dually" 350/3500 they are NOT an option by National DOT rules.

It is a national law, not state by state. And yes if you have them they need to work! Even non-commercial needs them if you are over 80" wide.
