Take it to a great diesel mechanic one who hopefully specializes in the 6.0. Have him look to see if its been bullet proofed, if not get write a check for $5000 and have him bullet proof it. Once done get a Scan Gauge II and monitor you oil and water temps.
When I had my 6.0 I was also having issue with the CAC tube staying on and the turbo not fully spooling up. Also, get a good coolant filter installed. After all that should be a great truck.

You've always got the Chicken Little's of the world. Put a good coolant filter on it, keep up on maintenance and occasionally beat it like a red headed step child and you should be good. Either delete the EGR or buy a Bulletproof system and change the oil cooler while you're in there and you should have a solid, trouble free truck.

170000 miles on my truck and absolutely love the thing. I've had to repair/fix normal wear items but have not had the truck puking parts as per a LOT of the banter about this motor, nor has she been parked at the side of the road with the apparent thousands of other 6.0L trucks that apparently break down every day? Never seen any and I travel the busiest highways in North America every day.

All the diesel trucks take a great of maintenance and work to keep working the way they are suppose to. You do NOT just put fuel and oil in these things and drive them till they stop. Regular maintenance is incredibly important.

Educate yourself on the engine and if you are not handy with a set of wrenches find a good diesel mechanic to help you out. This goes for all diesels including the Cummins and Duramax.

Fear not, like everything on the net the 6.0 problems are severely overblown. That and Ford haters.

Leave it and all diesels stock like the real engineers designed them.

Not so much overblown as may or may not happen to you. OP....I had one and only had turbo issues. The bulletproof advice is good of you want to keep it for a while. Aside from that;

Oil changes with full syn every 5000, fuel filters the same and fuel additive to ensure lubricity and clean injectors will go a long way to avoiding the injector issues...and yes, Ford was recommending their fuel additive for the 6.0...

I had two 6.0s, a 2004 and a 2007, both completely stock. Very little problem with either although neither had that many miles.

Friend had a 2003 6.0 that he did have some problems with. Dealer tech replaced turbo twice thinking that was the problem. That did not fix it. Another dealer with better mechanic found the problem was 3 bad injectors. Replaced those and no more problems.

Some did have their problems. But many have gone many years and many miles, stock, with no out of the ordinary problems.
