Wrong. Just plain wrong.
You HAVE to go back to OLDER 5.4 super duty engines to get away from cam phasers..
My 2003 F250 super duty 5.4 DOES NOT have cam phasers but my 2006 F250 Super Duty DOES have cam phasers.
2003 is a 2V and my 2006 is 3V
2003 has 265 HP and the 2006 has 300 HP.
I will hands down take to 2006 with 300 HP ANY DAY even with the potential cam phaser issue.
You also cannot just "drop in" any old super duty 5.4, to put a 2V into a vehicle that has a 3V 5.4 you WILL have to BUY AN ENTIRE DONOR VEHICLE in order to get all the correct wiring harnesses and computers not to mention dash parts..
Completely two different beasts.
Not to mention you would have to have change to the older 4 speed transmission and you would LOSE the TOW/HAUL feature of the 5 speed transmission..
As far as the OPs issue, what IS wrong with your engine?
If it is the cam phasers, there is aftermarket replacements that appear to last longer and have less trouble with them.. Can be done in the vehicle and some folks have figured out how to change them without tearing the front of the engine off (although from what I understand the issue starts with the chain tensioners leaking which the oil is routed through before the cam phasers), there is some really good info on Ford Truck Enthusiasts (FTE) website if you dig around..
Our 2006 now has 100,000 miles on it and only gets a slight cam phaser tick when cold and near the time to change the oil.
A light tick when cold is pretty much normal and to be expected with a cam phaser engine and is just an annoyance.. Now a heavy tick when cold or hot and loss of power that is a sign of a failed cam phaser and the engine reverts to 2V operation.
If your engine is really blown, get a 3V 5.4 short block and make sure you change your oil regularly and don't take it past 5K miles on a change.. keeping fresh clean oil in this engine goes a long way to keeping it happy.
If it is just a rod knocking, it might simply we worth rebuilding the one you have. i would guess it might be cheaper. - rowekmrExplorerIn response to OEM oil pumps there are a few people who think that the pump design contributes to the issues. It has an aluminum (iirc) back plate that can flex under load causing oil leaks.

The problem isn't all the oil pump fault, the problem starts with how the oil is routed.
This engine uses hydraulically operated chain tensioners, the tensioners with wear can leak.
That leak leads to low or no oil pressure past the tensioners which can starve the hydraulically operated cam phasers.
This can cause the cam phasers break and fail.
The leak at the tensioners CAN possibly affect the crankshaft pressure causing loose rod bearings or spun bearings. Only way to tell is to break it open..
The knock you are hearing may actually be a failed cam phaser and or chain tensioner also.. Sound travels very well in metal..
By the way, it is not just Ford that has issues with cam phasers, pretty much ALL manufacturers which have a 3V variable valve timing use cam phasers and they too have same failures..

Rock Auto has rebuilt 5.4's for about $2,600 ish after core charge.

Doesn't the electronics have to match up (pcm, ecm or whatever?) or are they universal?
