I need to replace the starter in my F-250 V-10. On ebay the price range for a new starters varies considerably. From $35. to $200. I figured sticking to a name brand would be best. Some of the cheap new starters come with a 5 year warranty. What would you recomend?

I would check the price on one like say ORilleys. I bet they offer one with a lifetime warranty. I have never had to take advantage of the replacement warranty. :hWhoah, just noticed you needed opinions from "mechanics" well that isn't me.

The two started solenoids can go bad. The fender solenoid is somewhat common. Mine lasts ~100,000 each. The started-mounted solenoid lasted me 3x that time.

And I turned wrenches professionally for a decade to get through college.Forget price and ask for the best they have. Don't blink, just install it.

You CAN buy cheap or you can buy higher quality just less expensive

One just needs to scroll thru the items available and pick based on quality vs JUST pricing.

They 'sell' same stuff available elsewhere just better price point.

I would take a quality REMAN starter from NAPA any day over a new one from them because the new will be a giant POS made in China.

They are NOT the NAPA they used to be!!!

Then they've changed in the last couple years? That's good to know.

Well got a surprise the starter had been replaced before with a Ultima remanufactured starter. Took less the 5 minutes to pull it, took longer to round up safety glasses and tools and jack up the truck. I can't believe how small it is compared to the Diesel starter.

I ordered a TYC from Rock Auto, should be here Thursday. Will go to the storage lot and get the 99 7.3 Diesel to drive until I replace the starter.

I had some bad experiences with rebuilt starters 20 or more years ago but not since then. I have no reservations about using rebuilt starters now.

Nobody mentioned this, so I will.

I have had limited experience (5-6 times) with DB Electrical (dbelectrical.com) for car, truck, and tractor starters and alternators, but 100% satisfaction.

New parts very competitively priced. No core charge IIRC.

As I said above I will replace the starter and rebuild the old starter when I have some time. Rainy day project. Ironically just changed the starter in my old 99 7.3 Diesel earlier this year.

I'd rebuild it myself before getting anything but OEM. Part are available and they really very easy to disassemble.

Permanent magnet starters are really very simple. The only wear items are the bearing, the brushes and the commutator. While the windings need to be tested for sort and opens (not likely if the commutator does not have excessive wear) they do not commonly fail.

Clean the commutator bars with 200+ grit every cloth. Replace the brushes. Replace the solenoid (if you can find a replacement).
I will probably rebuild the old starter since I have more then one truck that uses the same starter. I don't know if the starter is actually bad it might be the solenoid. Have to pull the starter to get to it so will just change it out.
