2012 Dodge 3500 4x4 with cummins diesel. Got letter and called to check on offer can buy extended warranty thru 2019 or 85,000 mile for $2,410.00 I have 30,000 miles currently on truck no problems not sure what I want to do but offer ends on the 26th. I know truck has 100,000 warranty on motor and powertrain also if you dont use extended warranty full $2,410.00 is refunded. So Ram is betting that I will use the warranty but cost to them less than $2,410.00. Just not sure that I will have repairs amounting to more than $2,410.00 before waranty would run out. Any thoughts

With a Ram truck with the Cummins engine I would not bother with the extended warranty. You have a very reliable engine and very reliable transmission and any other repair is likely to cost a lot less than $2,000 as with a water pump or alternator or NOx sensor.

Not a Ram, but a Dodge Grand Caravan: Bought a 2008 demo with 19K miles in 2009. Paid over $2K for extended warranty thru Chrysler. At about 30K, it developed a miss. Dealer could find no codes, suggested gasoline treatment fuel injector cleaner. No luck, still missed. Returned to dealer at least twice, no code. They started guessing what was wrong (example, plugs & wires) and expected me to pay since these are "maintenance items". At 40K miles, no thank you. We now have a Toyota Sienna and no plans to buy a Chrysler product ever again. I hate that because everyone brags on the Cummins TD.

Sounds like totally incompetent mechanics at a totally incompetent dealership to me. :h

Read up on the 4th Gen Rams on the different diesel forums. Problems are always exaggerated it seems and I haven't seen much report of issues especially with electronics. Emissions maybe but that already has a healthy warranty I think. Plus you can delete the truck for a little over a grand still if emissions are out of warranty and your dpf craps the bed.
I'd pocket the $2400 personally but then again my 07 had no warranty about 100 mi after Driving of the new car lot due to mods. Only 2 issues I had before 100k mi were steering box shuttle valve locked up. New box and install was about $450 iirc and it was a fluke not a known problem. And the hydroboost pump but those are upgraded and better on the 6.7s and again not terribly expensive.
Pretty much everything I own or have owned has had no warranty and the $ saved over the years on deprecation hits and warranty purchase could prolly buy a new Ram diesel outright.

That said the electronics could get expensive but they're pretty reliable. Know several peoe with 4 th gens with a lot of miles and no issues.

As other have stated, If it is from Chrysler you should consider it and you should shop around. I know with the Ford extended warranty price varies depending on who you buy it from. Never buy a 3rd party warranty, TP is worth more.

My 2012 turned 3 last week. I'm gambling and not buying the extended warranty. I bought in on my 03 (at employee purchase price) and didn't get my money's worth. So far, my 2012 has been great. Crossing my fingers that it continues.

from experience... bought my 08 ram new and opted for a good chrysler extended warrenty. At about 65000 km (about 40000 miles), they replaced pretty much the whole front end (u joints, pittman arm and some other stuff), water pump, some LED lights in the exhaust brake switch and heated seat switch burnt out which require a replacement of the complete switch. My truck is pretty much a pavement queen and is not abused in anyway. Not sure if the newer trucks are better but they do cost a lot to work on if you need to.

I agree that 3rd party warranties are a scam. Case in point. I purchased a 2005 Cummins dually with 81000 miles on it partly because it came with an extended warranty(3rd party). A year later it needed a new tranny. The repair shop said the warranty wasn't worth the paper it was printed on and wouldn't even call the insurance co. So I called the insurance company and they asked me if I kept up the dealer service. When I said yes they asked if I had the paperwork. I said yes and they covered the new tranny. What a scam that was! Incidently, I also used a different repair shop.

If it is a Chrysler warranty, get it.

Many years ago, my position was always to avoid extended warranties. With the complexities of vehicles today and the high cost of repairs, I strongly recommend them, as long as it is a warranty from the manufacturer.

I have no affiliation with them other than they gave me a much better deal than Chryysler. They also gave me 12 months to pay with no interest.
Let me know if it works out for you

+1 on this. They might have a better price.

I've never been one to buy extended warranties, but the electronics and things on these latest vehicles is so complicated and expensive, I will buy one for my next vehicle. I am favoring a Jeep and will get the lifetime max care. But then, I expect to keep the Jeep for 15 or 20 years so I am quite confident I'll get my money's worth.

A 5/100 coverage is another equation entirely, so it's hard to say just how you'd make out. If you buy a vehicle that turns out to be trouble-free, or if you sell it earlier than you expected, or if it gets wrecked, they will probably come out on top. If you have just two or three nagging or semi-expensive problems out of warranty, you come out on top. So, like Clint Eastwood might say, "Do ya feel lucky?" ๐Ÿ™‚

This can't be stressed enough. Aftermarket warrantees are one of the biggest scams around.

Yep.... shop prices around the net. Just be sure it's a from Chrysler/Mopar and not an aftermarket warranty. All the ones I've seen will be sold from a dealer somewhere.

I went with the Lifetime Max Care on mine (6.4 Hemi) but I don't think that's available on a diesel. The fine print is they will pay the price of the truck according to NADA if/when the repair exceeds the value of the truck.

I think statistically, the chances of big problems with less than 100-120K are slim. I mainly got mine for when I get up to 150-200K range. I got rid of my last truck around that mileage for fear of upcoming repairs. This time I don't care. I just drive it like I stole it ๐Ÿ™‚

My wife had a similar deal for warranty for her Subaru back in 2006. We did end up getting the money back as we had no warranty claim. However, make sure you read the fine print and figure out where that refund goes. We found out the refund went to her original selling dealer so we had to work via email and phone to get the refund check sent back to us. The idea was to get you into trading for a newer vehicle.
