Removing Rust from Galvanized Wheel

I just picked up my first pop up (a '74 Krown). I want to remove rust from one side of the galvanized tongue wheel and am looking for tips to a) remove the rust, and b) treat the derusted part to prevent further rusting (e.g., paint, rust converter, etc.).

Any tips or best practices?

Many thanks!

  • Don't try to remove the rust unless you have the correct equipment and a ventilated work area. Grinding, sanding, or otherwise removing the zinc plating releases dangerous toxic chemicals in the air.

Use a rust neutralizer and a quality rust covering paint. Rustoleum is an okay consumer brand.

If you want to use really good stuff, get some POR-15.
