Replacing air filer on RV generator

Question

Onan RV Genset 2.5KVD generator. Removed old air filter but can't figure out how to insert the new one, using the spring. Tried placing the spring on the filter before inserting it and tried inserting the spring after inserting the filter. Neither worked. Must be a simple procedure but can't figure it out.
