sewer pipes

Just wondering why some campgrounds raise their sewer pipes so high? Camped at Gatlinburg Tn at a place far away from any river , creek or stream. Some of the sewer pipes were about a foot or more high making it impossible to drain the holding tanks without picking the drain hose up each day and walking the hose down to help it drain. The sewers pipes next to us were even with the ground. I know some may do it in case of a flood , but with the one next to us and most of the others even with the ground it just did not make sense to me. Oh well, we had a good time camping anyway.

It may also have something to do with keeping rainwater out during a gullywasher. That could be a real mess.

Sometimes some county or local code may mandate something like that. To remedy -- use a Sewer Solution (which is fairly inexpensive, but uses lots of water), or a macerator pump ($300, but gets the job done, although you will need a garden hose to 3" adapter.)

since the others are not that way, I would guess the one for your site was repaired at some point and just not cut down to ground level… although I have seen a few where the section above the ground level was removable for use…

I was told by a campground maintenance guy that it is so the sewer hose creates a trap by not fully draining (unless you lift the other end).
Supposedly this 'trap' keeps sewer gases from escaping.

This was his story. I'm just passing it on.

I'm thinking that is because they want to keep the dirt out of the pipe or it is just the way the plumber decided to install it without thinking/knowing how it would be used.
I started carrying a Sewer Solution for those cases and, wouldn't you know, have never had to use it.

I guess the CG has a reason for doing it that way.
You can always get a macerator pump for those situations.

I've wondered the same thing...and some of the high ones I've encountered even had a threaded cap, which would seem to keep out any flooding waters. I can only wonder if those who installed them had ever flushed an RV before.
