Shocks and Struts

As you may have seen in my many previous posts, I am planning on taking a 3 week trip this summer from Ohio to NM, AZ, CO, and others. I was considering getting a new truck, but, after having my mechanic go over my Silverado I have decided to keep it. I have to replace the tires, brakes, shocks, and struts.

This post is about replacing my shocks and struts. The original plan was to go with Bilstein 4600 shocks and struts and either Supersprings or Roadmaster Active Suspension. My mechanic recommended Monroe HD Quick Struts for the front and Monroe HD coil over shocks in the back. I put coil overs on my S-10; the good news is it can haul better, but the ride is rougher and bouncier. I like the idea of the quick struts because I don’t have to worry about the springs and all the mounts, spring rubbers, etc. which will probably need to be replaced after 115K miles. I was/am going to have him replace the struts and I can do the rear shocks. My truck has the Z71 package so Bilsteins of some sort were OE.

I am looking for advice based on the above.
  • The current shocks are not leaking, they are the originals and are 8 year old with 115K miles on them. I want to get my truck in the best, safest, condition that I can before my trip.

Being as old as they are with that many miles, would it be Ok to change just the struts and not the other mounting parts?

If Bilstein's were OE, that should still qualify for Lifetime replacement.

Idk if OE parts qualify. Tired that once years ago on a Z71 and the stealer told me no......but them guys don't always tell the truth, lol.
  • Nothing wrong with Monroe parts but I'm guessing your mech uses them a lot and maybe gets a price break on them? I say that because Bilsteins are pretty much the gold standard for shocks and struts. I'd bet monroes are cheaper to purchase and will do the job fine. Bilstein used to, may still have, a lifetime warranty. I've got 100kmi on Bilsteins on my truck and they haven't blown out yet.
You already know what coil over shocks are about. They work but I don't prefer them as shock mounts aren't designed to be load carrying. I'd put new shocks on the rear and use an add a leaf, Timbrens, stable loads or airbags before coil over shocks.

Struts on a HD p/u or even a non HD (exception being perhaps a small/mid-sized) ?

Yes, my Silverado 1500 does have struts.
