Shopping advice needed - not typical RV question.

I am posting it here because I know I'll get a bunch of good responses and real life feedback.
My wife and I may be looking to replace our current vehicles in the next 6 - 12 months. We would be looking for a probably 2 year old used ones.

Hers is 2007 Subaru Tribeca, 7 passenger, 74k miles.

Objective & question: she would like to downsize it a little but maintain the 7 seating set up. What crossovers are out there that may be smaller than Tribeca , have AWD, and still hold 7 passengers ?

Mine is 2006 Eddie Bauer Explorer, 4.6 3 valve with 6R60 tranny, 4WD, 185k miles, 7 seats. I use it as a people/kids hauler, pull my utility enclosed double axle trailer GWR 7000, and also have a small Fisher plow mounted on it. The towing capacity of the Explorer is 7100 lbs (less additional staff, options, etc....). I never load it up to the max, most was maybe around 5k, and that was tough on the car, so the 2k margin is something I like.
It is still goings strong, I flush the differential, transfer case and tranny every 60k miles and besides wheel bearings and normal maintenance items, you would never tell it has that mileage. But I think I am trying to unload it before a major (engine or tranny) failure.

Objective & question: replace it with another mid size SUV with v8 (must be on frame because of the plow). Is there another midsize SUV meeting these standards: 2012 or newer, v8, body on frame, and 7 seats ?
They stopped my generation of explorers in 2010, my next candidate was 4Runner, but they dropped 4.7v8 in 2010 as well. I am considering a Tahoe or Expedition if it comes to no other choices.

Waiting for opinions and advices.
Thanks
  • My wife has a 2011 Explorer (previously drove a 2011 Forester) and loves it. We have comfortably fit 4 adults and two car seats (guys up front, middle row one car seat and a wife and same in the back). We've towed our snowmobile trailer (Blizzard V-Nose, GVWR of 5,000) with 4 adults and it did well getting to the Adirondacks. Not something I would do continually with the V6 though. If I had my way, she would be driving an Expedition as I thought their 3rd row was much better than the Tahoe.

Another note, you can get an Arcadia or Traverse with 2nd row captains chairs, which would be great.
  • Most of the time, it's just 4 of us, but we always get "additional" kids between practices or some trips. But in general, the back 2 seats do not need to be so spacious, it's mostly for short trips.
  • Tribeca, Volvo XC90, Mazda CX7, Explorer are already small for 7 people. We had a minivan and now Suburban. Even the SWB full sized half tons are small for 7 actual people, not just seats. And storage with all 3 rows in use is tiny.
  • Look at a Land Rover LR4. You can pick up a better equipped LR4 for cheaper than a comparable Tahoe.
  • Around here we would consider her Subaru to be almost new since it has such low miles, but we don't live in the rust belt either. The Sequoia seats 7 or 8 and would probably push your plow. Personally, I'd just keep running what you have until they die or until I wanted to be sure I wasn't stranded on a long trip. If you just want new vehicles, then economic concerns may not matter.

Chevy Traverse and Ford Explorer are both 7 seaters and probably offer the most room. We looked at all the 7 seaters (before the new Highlander came out) and those 2 were the best IMO. Imagine the towing capacity would be comfortably about 4,000 lbs loaded. The wife has a new Traverse and likes it a lot. We don't tow with it, however.
  • If you are looking at used for the wife, the 2012 RAV4 offered 7 passenger seating. The back row is of course quite tight, but might be worth a look.

For you, you could also look at aSequoia, but Tahoe might be the way to go.
  • I have been looking at smaller 6 seater SUVs and have come up with the Tribeca, Volvo XC90, Mazda CX7, Explorer.

I think she has about as small of a vehicle that you can get that will seat that many.
