Thanks to all who take the time to read!
I have to confess, I was born and raised in OK, and lived more than half my life there till work took me to other nice places, but I don’t recall ever even hearing about the Great Salt Plains. My son told me he recalls going on a Scout camp-out there, but I’ve slept since then, so like a lot of other things……….poof. :Z
Here’s a few other fun facts about OK:
The highest mountain in OK is in the Kiamichi range, way down in the southeastern part of the state. The Kiamichis, like all the mountain ranges in the Midwest, are ancient. They were as high as the Rockies at one time. The highest peaks reach 2500’ elevation, but they are not the highest points in the state.
The highest point in OK is 4973’ at Black Mesa, which is in the farthest northwestern tip of the panhandle very close to the CO state line. It has no distinct peak, and doesn’t even look like you’re at a high elevation. There is a marker there, though. It’s within a nature preserve, and can be reached on foot. The closest town is Kenton (pop. 17), and though OK is officially in the Central time zone, Kenton unofficially observes Mountain time due to its closeness to NM. Black Mesa SP is nearby, and has camping facilities.
