If you have 2-6V batteries connected in parallel (a 6V system), it should be able to run some very basic and low power functions. The slide motor does not fall into that category.
^^^^ I think you are on to something.
If the OP's batteries were just recently changed, they may have accidentely hooked then up in parallel instead of series.
