Small leak on water pump

We discovered a small drip on our water pump. Took the camper out two weekends ago(still had antifreeze in the lines). Filled the fresh water tank half way at the CG. When the pump kicks on there was a drip. My husband tighten it down to the point it was a very slow drip. We put a dish towel down, emptied the tank and stopped using it. The towel was just damp when we took it out 2 days later. But we know a small drip can still cause big problems.

We asked our local dealer where we been buying parts that needed replaced or where missing in the last few weeks, if the gasket just needs a new seal or tightened further. He told us we need a whole new pump that there is no gasket. Is this true or is he just trying to get more money out of us, since we don't really know.

The pump is under the sofa. The sofa folds up to a "V" and my husband can't quite get to the pump to see it clearly. This coming weekend we are planing to bring it home and try to get the sofa out to see the pump more clearly.

I don't think you can get one for 50 bucks anymore. 65 Maybe. But, 75 more likely. Depending on how fancy of a model he has it would be 125-150 or more. Not saying I disagree with the rest of you post though.

  • Ya, we need the name and model of the pump. The one I have can be rebuilt; by myself; cheaper then buying a new one. There are different ones and I'm not sure if that's true for all of them. You can not pay the dealer to rebuild it though. The would get too much money to do that.
  • When you get it out then let us know what you have and better advice can be given. Some pumps can be rebuilt but the pump housing has to be intact and some you can just replace the head.
depends on what pump you have
  • No it is not leaking at the inlet or outlet sides. It is leaking where the faceplate mounts to the pump, at the gasket. And it only drips right before pump builds pressure and kicks off.
  • Is the leak on the inlet or outlet side of the pump and what make/model pump.
Some pumps have a washer on the inlet and outlet side of the water pump. This may need to be replaced. I am looking for picture of one to post
    And I cannot find one
  • Based on cost of new pump it's likely cheaper to buy a new pump than have dealer mess with rebuilding/fixing old pump. You can always buy a rebuild kit if your a DIYer but if your pump is old I would probably just buy a new one. Just my 02.
  • Probably can't get just a gasket (or "O" ring that's more likely) will have to get a rebuild kit.
The manufacturer will have one or a part # for one .
    Good Luck, Mike
