Surgery on the TT's throne.

Yesterday afternoon, I began bringing my TT back to life after sleeping since last December. I put the Clorox solution in the fresh water tank to sanitize it. Unfortunately, during the winter, the Water Module/Water Valve on the Thetford Aqua Magic V toilet gave way, and water was spraying everywhere.

So, today drove to RV Services of Virginia and bought a new kit. Fortunately, it wasn't that hard to replace the WM/WV assembly. It all comes in one bag, including a new gasket ring for the base of the comode.

Hooked everything back up, cut on the water pump, vola, no more leaks. I can get back to prepping the trailer now.
  • I too have the Aqua Magic V. Keep a spare valve on hand. That is the vacuum breaker valve and I replaced mine twice on a 7 year old camper. When mine have gone bad they leak a little water behind the toilet. It is a very slight leak and can be used if camping until replaced. I keep one in the camper now. Sounds like yours froze. Did you winterize the valve/water system?
  • I replace one on a old TT I had one time. I didn't know how, and was afraid, to remove the toilet so I did the whole procedure from above by using a mirror and laying it on the ground behind the toilet.

That is tricky. I pulled it off though.

How do you winterize? Pink or air?
  • I winterize with air. However, I keep a heater inside to keep the interior above freezing also.

I used air last year also, and last year was a much colder winter for us.

  • The typical failure of the vacuum breaker is a small amount of water seeping past the o rings in the valve and making it past the vacuum inlet. This results is a little water making it to the floor after filling the bowl and not so much from a quick flush. The fact yours sprayed water once put back in operation is most likely from freezing and cracking.

I did have to replace mine twice but the last one has been in there several years. In talking with Thetford several years ago when replacing for the second time I was told a change was made to address the problem. Since then it has been fine. Either way this does not seem to be what your problem was. Pink stuff is your friend.
  • I suppose it's possible it froze but I don't think so. As far as I know, it never got below 32 in side. We kept a heater hooked up all winter, and this winter wasn't as bad as last winter. I know the natural gas usage this year is way down from the same period last winter.

What I found interesting was no O ring was to be found on the water valve I removed. There should have been one, and I would think there was one, but I didn't see it upon removal of the module.

The new module had a red O ring.

  • Glad to hear the fix was simple.
Sounds like it froze to me as well.
When you mention you kept the heater hooked up all winter are you referring to an electric heater. A minor power outage could have been the culprit.
I use space heaters myself to extend the season. They are not foolproof and certainly no substitute for winterizing.
  • I winterized by using forced air to blow out the system. We had no power outages that would have resulted in a major freezing period.

If we had had a long period of no electricity, we would have moved out to the trailer anyway, and used the propane furnace to keep ourselves warm.

You have to take apart the valve to get access to the O-rings that seal water from entering the vacuum breaker assembly. This is the round part with a hole that sits in the upright position once installed. Many folks have replaced the O-rings instead of replacing the entire valve. As I’m sure you are aware the red O-ring you referred to is for the flush/fill hose for the bowl.
