Switch From Diesel to Gas.

Are you planning to keep the 318SAB for quite awhile? I would look at that issue first to see what the long term camping needs might be, then figure out if that new F250 is still in the picture. You are contemplating a move down from a 350 so that would indicate that you might want to stay with the 318SAB weight class, where the 350 would allow some upward wiggle room.

Sure it will do the job if you're under the weight limits.

The 6.2 is a great engine. It puts out a ton of power. As you know or may not know, you will have to wind the 6.2 to get the power out of it. Just plant your right foot and it WILL make power.

The gross vehicle weight rating of your trailer is just over the max tow rating of an F150. If I wanted to save money as my main objective I would look into buying an F150 with the 3.5L Ecco Boost. If I really wanted a Super Duty I would likely purchase a slightly used F350 with the 6.7 diesel before buying a brand new F250 gas. But I'm sure the 6.2 gas engine would have no trouble pulling a 12000 lb trailer.

The 318 is plenty big for the 2 of us. I dont see us going bigger. I still might go with the 350. There is not much of a price difference

There is not much of a price difference but in the super duty there is a great deal of height difference, at least 4 inches. Not sure if the gasser is the same or not. You might want to check on that before you pull the trigger.,

Exactly. That was one of the deciding factors I had when I went from my '04 Chevy 6.0L gas to my current Ram-Cummins. We go to eastern TN every fall and there are areas in the Appalachians where I have to hold 4,000RPM for about 15 minutes going up a hill then rev it again after the valley on the downhill side.

The truck made the power it was supposed to make and it ALWAYS got us there. But that was only towing 7,200lbs. You're talking 2 tons more than what I was towing. My GM engine was rated for 360 ft-lbs and 330HP. The Ford 6.2L V8 is rated for 434 ft-lbs and 411HP. Okay, that is more grunt than my GM engine, but those peak values are both above 4500 RPM.

My guess is you'll be in the same boat I was in with long, steep hills. The truck will get you there, but you will have to endure a wound up engine to get to the hilltop. On my last trip I found myself agitated and cranky when we arrived and I really think it was just from listening to engine rev and scream through the hills. At that point I decided the truck had done it's job long enough and it was time for a change.

Your opinions may vary, but that was my experience.

F350 SRW with 6.2 and 4.30 gears would be an ideal truck. I have decided that when I would get another truck, I would do the gmc 3500 SRW with 6.0 gas and the 4.10 rear. Of course by then they may have another gas version who knows...

X2 on the large and roomy 318SAB. I liked it a lot, especially with that desk area. My mistake was taking the DW to the RV show just before we retired :-).

The 350 with a 6.2 would likely be a lot cheaper to maintain then a diesel version.

Those are power numbers for the F150 version of the 6.2L which is no longer available after the 2014 year models. The current F250 6.2L is rated at 385 hp and 430 lb-ft. It used to have only 410 lb-ft in the 2016 and below yet due to the lower gearing of the 6R140 transmission, even then it was putting more torque to the wheels than the Hemi 6.4L with its 429lb-ft.
