I just can't bring myself to paying a monthly fee to own a TT. I paid cash for mine, so I don't have loan payments, and the only thing I pay for is registration, insurance and campground fees.

Really?? Do they realize that many pickups cost more than some of their luxury cars now?

We live in a HOA neighborhood and you can only park a RV or TT in front of your house for less than 48 hours to load it or unload it only. We only have about 2 people in the neighborhood who do this and they follow the rules. We have a TT that is in storage when we are not using it. I would not like to look out at the other homes either if everyone was allowed to park a travel trailer, RV, boat or extra cars all over the place. That is why we moved here.

In our town you can't park an unattached trailer in a driveway or on the street. My TT is parked next to the house, just behind the driveway. The code also says the trailer needs to be on a "surfaced" pad, so you can't just park it on grass. Our next door neighbor bought their house a few years ago when we already had our previous TT. When we upgraded last year and went and asked him if he would have any issues with the TT parked there. He said no. The neighbor on the other side parks his powerboat in his driveway, so I know he isn't going to call the cops!

Here's a cut'n'paste copy of the ordinance I violated:

"478.85. - Parking of unattached trailers prohibited.
No person shall stop, stand or park a trailer which is not attached to a properly licensed and insured motor vehicle on any street or highway except as otherwise specifically exempted by Minneapolis City Ordinances or state law. A "trailer" for the purpose of this section is any vehicle without motor power designed for carrying persons or property and for being drawn by a motor vehicle. For the purposes of this section, "not attached" means a trailer that is not attached to a motor vehicle in such a manner that the motor vehicle and trailer can immediately be operated in a safe and legal manner without further attachment."

This is a Minneapolis city ordinance. The ticket is absolutely valid; I did exactly what the city says I can't. My only excuse is ignorance, and as they always say, ignorance is no excuse. I have an appointment with a hearing officer later this month, and will basically beg forgiveness, as I have not a leg to stand on. I can only hope the hearing officer is in a good mood; otherwise I'll just pony up the $42 and chalk it up to experience. If I was working instead of retired, I would just pony up anyway instead of taking time off work.

I wonder what legally defines "tow vehicle."

One could attach a hitch to the back of an electric scooter and connect to the trailer.... just sayin'.

I have a customer that lives in a snobby community with a HOA . One of the many Hoa rules , is they dont allow trailers . He had his camper in his driveway for the weekend for repairs and got a fine of $ 200 from the HOA . He was pi$$ed . So he read the rules up and down . And then read the county laws . And no trailer can be left unhooked on the road . But the HOA rules dont apply to county roads . His wife didnt want him to start trouble , So he had a friend that had a ugly camper and another friend with a spare van ( also ugly ) He hooked both together and parked them in front of the president of the HOA's house . Police were called , but there were no laws broken . The president insisted that they were in violation of the HOA rules . The cops told the president ...This is a public road , HOA rules dont apply to the roads , and they only apply to the homeowners , not the rest of the citizens . About 6 months later they amended the bylaws to allow trailers next to garages on the side of the homes .
