Thoughts on Rear View Mirror w/ LCD Backup + Side Cameras

In a bit of late night Amazon browsing last night I came across this:

Rostra 250-8273 Rearview Mirror with Built-In 7.3" LCD Monitor & Multiple Video Inputs

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this or something similar. There are a lot of much cheaper options available (some as low as $40) but what sets this unit apart is that it has the ability to incorporate side view cameras in addition to the standard backup camera. Though there are similar units designed for larger Motorhomes, what I like about this unit is it replaces the rearview mirror and doesn't require a large monitor to place somewhere.

Since I'll be towing a trailer more often I'm hoping this could give me an added margin of safety.

Thoughts?
  • Were getting ready to install back up camera. Started out with a mirror replacement but ended up going different route. Replacing the Am/FM /casset/CD/clock in dash radio with an android unit that has backup feature. Cheap unit that comes with camera-only has one camera input and its probably more like a $20 camera.

Mostly other wants that swayed us, since were in there wiring. GPS/map, hands free phone, backup camera, wifi etc, more stuff than I'll ever use but still listen to radio,CD, all in one unit. Backup camera for camper, will be a separate install-once I figure out how to switch inputs and wire from top of camper...

I don't know if they can be had with split screens though. Just responding to the "doesn't require a large monitor to place somewhere"
    comment as an option.

I think Buzzcut did a write up on his install sometime last year.
  • the $40 ones are set apart because they are cr@p. the one in my 2011 Highlander is barely adequate and not much larger than the $40 ones. the one in my 2016 Tacoma is big and great, sort of like that one with full width picture.
looks interesting to me, don't think I would worry about getting the side views however.
    bumpy
  • I have an older Rostra that used a little less than half the mirror for the display. It's about 5 years old and has been perfect. Great image and the camera hasn't gotten moisture in it like some others I have owned. I have nothing bad to say about this setup.
    Wish I'd gotten one sooner!
