Front Camera or Convex Mirror

Howdy!

I just moved up to a Class A from a B+. The first day we had it I noticed there is a blind spot for the first couple of feet in front of the windshield -- the distance will vary depending on the height of the child or dog.

I was wondering if anyone has installed a convex mirror or front camera to solve this problem. We are very worried about small children in campgrounds.

Many thanks,

Don Simmons
  • Many thanks to those who responded.

For those who don't understand - we are not talking about when driving down the road, but when getting ready to pull away from a stopped condition.

The other day my wife completely disappeared from view, but she was just in front of the coach about 5 feet from the bumper. A little 3 year old would still not be seen 8 feet in front of the coach. With the way I have seen kids run free in RV parks and the Texas A&M tailgate lots, I worry about these things.
  • You could go two different directions with this for a fairly low cost and minimal amount of intrusion. Either a camera that mounts on a license plate that you can feed into you current rear camera monitor or the ultra sonic distance alarm. I would go with the alarm that beeps when you get close to something. Taking your eyes off the road to watch the camera display kind of defeats the purpose while with the alarm you'll get an audio feedback. System doesn't care which bumper it's mounted in (front or rear) still works the same. Just add a switch to the dash to turn it on or off rather than working off the back up lights to trigger it. Amazon has sensor packages for less than $40.

Once you get moving how are they going to get there without you seeing them? OH now I understand... you are looking at the camera monitor, not where you are going. Sorry but I do not see it as a issue unless you stop a lot like a school bus.
  • I went with the camera for the same reason. Have a few very small little ones here on the block and they seem to be able to move very fast and get away from their parents. We put it in the tow when we are out and about.
  • I use my co-pilot for both purposes. If I run over anything, its her fault! Also, it has an ear-piercing audio feature!
  • Hey Rob. Hope you're still subscribed here. I was thinking mirrors for both of those. What did your cameras and monitor cost you and how long ago installed?
  • I installed a Camera that shows the area immediately in front and another that covers the right hand blind spot!
I also use an entirely separate monitor.

I am afraid of Motorcycles that sneak in and then stall!

Not to mention Pedestrians and Kids on bikes!
  • They are required on school buses but mount different than our MH mirrors. They should be adaptable.
