Tie downs

I am new to the forum and to truck camping. I will pick up my used unit in AZ (2 days drive) Lance 2004 1121. My question, What is the best tie down system. I was looking at torklift but I can't find anyplace near Augusta GA to install them. Any information will be GREATLY appreciated. Please help.

I went with TL's in 06 on my Chevy over HJ because I did not want to drill 16 holes in my truck. Also at that time HJ's were bending the bumpers on some models.
TL's are easy to install and I have not removed mine since I installed them. They do rust but I have not seen any structure fail, I do check them when I get the oil changed.
I did have some parts sprayed with bed liner, those parts don't have any rust.
As far as ruff roads and I have been on some I have not had any problems, yet.

Some have complained that they can't open the fuel door. I have not had that problem. There is a little give in the mounting position so they won't interfere with fueling.

With the boxed frames on the new trucks, installing them is bit more tricky. I went TL for the front as they looked easier to install on my '08 Dodge then the locally made ones. The fuel tank is in the way.

Lets see, my wife drives farm tractors and puts up with me and that IMO is quite an accomplishment.

Never seen her under a vehicle though she did help me change the spindle and replace the blades on the lawnmower the other day....She handed me the parts...lol

Pretty good on a quad too.

Checking oil, tires, filling the windshield washer bottle, no way. She's a put gas in and if it breaks, call me.

Said to her the other day, what you gonna do when I kick off? her answer was 'hire it done'. She can afford that.:)

IMO, both systems have their merits and the TL system isn't the holy grail of tiedown's BTW, HJ is now offering a cam lock tie down similar to the TL Fast Gun at a lesser price point. Competition breeds savings...

HJ's in my opinion are better for TC'ers who go "more off-road" than the average bear. I have been in situations on rocky off roading conditions where I had to take off a forward TL. I have not been in a situation where I had to remove the rear TL due to an obstacle.

I am always aware of these rugged situations... usually it is in a scenario where I am in 4WD low and I am always scanning the upcoming terrain. HJ's would make the more extreme (in relation to most "city" TC'ers) a bit more easier than the TL's.

I am not an extreme TC'er, but I would hazard a guess that I go in places where 80+ percent members here would not go... TL's can work in rugged terrain, but as always the eyes looking ahead make for the safe and damage-free camping trip.

Both HJ's and TL's are good equipment.

TL's have their disadvantages (which is why I would opt for HJ's next time)... you have an added piece that hangs down. They do not hold up well. Mine had the finish chip off almost from day 1 and I need to spray paint them every years or so to keep rust build up in check... forget about the portions that are under the truck... rust city.

The ice and snow build-up on the TL's in winter are almost impossible to remove if the chunder freezes in place.


I will say that the Tork Lift Fastguns are tough. I accidentally ran over one and it only bent the handle:

Guess I'm old school. I have HappyJac tiedowns and I've never had issue one with them, on road and off road but back when I installed them on my '97 Ford, Torklift wasn't even around.

Couple things I don't like about the TL tiedowns is one they are overpriced and two you have to get UNDER the truck to put the extensions in the bolt on receivers.

While some installs are easy, I know of a couple guys who boght them and the install was a nightmare and included moving the fuel tank to install the fromt drivers TL. One guy sent them back and went with HappyJac.

The post about 'His wife installing them while he was at work is phooey'. She might have put the outers in the receivers and put the linch pins in, but installing the mounts, no way.

The price turns me off. If I went that route, I'd fabricate my own from structural and plate.

HappyJac's are one one pied ears that stick out in the front of the bed about 2" and you never remove them. The rear tiedowns mount to your rear bumber.

You can very easily install the Torqlift tiedowns yourself.

Takes about an hour with a socket set. You need an adjustable wrench for the large nut that opens to 30 mm.

Very straightforward. Just follow directions.

You don't have too many options, so you have to spend $300 for few lb of steel, but it is how the game go.
I bought ties for my 2017 Ford directly from the company as nobody else had them.
Communication was not good as I did not get tracking number, but they arrived in few days, so all come good.
My first tie had bolt holes overflown with paint, so I struggle fishing the bolts, but cleaned the holes on 2nd tie and it was a breeze to install.

I just installed TL's on our new truck. like the last two trucks before.

Very easy install, but does require some tools and a bit of grunt. I think almost any mechanic could install for you with directions that are included.

As for TL vs HJ. I only have to assume that HJ are better now than the model that damaged my 94 Dodge. TL has been flawless for me through 3 trucks with heavy campers.

We have Torklifts. My wife installed them while I was at work. She said it wasn't a big deal (probably helps that she's short and the truck is tall--less awkward bending for her).

Hey Jim, yes they look good, but might have been tighter if you hooked the end of the straps to the spokes in the wheel. :B

I use Torklift Tiedowns and installed them myself. A reputable mechanic or garage should be able to do the install for you. Or you could contact a TC or RV dealer about installing them for you. There are many RV dealers in AZ.

Happijac works fine for me.

What's best for you might not be the best for me.

Its a matter of personal preference.
