Tire Pressure Monitors

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if many of you use a tire pressure monitoring system on your TV. My old Avalanche had it included in the truck but I now have a 2014 Expedition that does not give you an actual air pressure for each tire. Just some sort of an alert if there is a problem. I have a Truck System Technologies system for the TT that works really well. I guess my question is, if I put those monitors on the stem of the truck tires, will that effect the "built-in" monitoring already on the truck? While towing it is nice to know the temps and pressure while running down the road, but I don't want to mess up the internal system and take the monitors on and off each time we go camping.

It should not interfere as we run a completely different frequency than your system on your truck. Thanks, Mike TST

Since you already have the TST's on your trailer, I would cal them and ask. I cannot see one interfering with the other system,and since all you need to purchase is four additional stem sensors, that would seem to be the way to go. Ask TST if they will take them back if they interfere with your Ford OEM system.

If got basically the same type OEM TPMS on my Tundra, ie, it does not read out actual pressure like the wife's Traverse does. It will just tell you if a tire is low. I have the TST 507 external system with replaceable batteries and it's worked great for about the last 3 years, wouldn't leave home without it.

BTW, I don't see how any of the aftermarket TPMS systems for RVs could interfere with your tow vehicle's TPMS, never heard of that problem occurring.

My Avalanche worked the same way giving the tire pressure through the DIC. -. When I bought the TST I am pretty sure it came with extra monitors so I will give that a try. Maybe the Ford works on rotation since it doesn't give tire pressure and only a warning when there is a problem.

I'll interject some more confusion:

My Avalanche (and my Cadillac) tell me which tire is low through the Driver Information Center (DIC). Each wheel has a sensor, and when you move wheels around you need to reprogram the system to tell it which position the wheel is in. Our BMW only tells you that a tire is low, not which one, and uses the wheel speed sensors to identify changes in the diameter of the tire as the result of low (or changed) pressure. Our Wrangler gives a low pressure warning that is based on actual pressure using wheel sensors, but it doesn't tell you which one is low.

Since the TT system uses external monitors, I doubt it would interfere with whatever system your Ford is using - whether it's using wheel speed or RF on the wheels. I've never used one, but if you think about it - the TT system has to be able to operate in a manner that will not interfere with other monitoring systems (or other radio systems in general). I think they'll be fine installed on the TV.

OP, if I understand your question correctly, the only way I would think it wouldn't work would be if the two sensors are on the same exact frequency. If your vehicle system is based off of rotation, then it wouldn't be using any frequency and the other system should work perfectly fine.


"on my Ford" was implied. Since the OP had a Ford I was merely explaining that my Ford doesn't work by rotation.

OP, if I understand your question correctly, the only way I would think it wouldn't work would be if the two sensors are on the same exact frequency. If your vehicle system is based off of rotation, then it wouldn't be using any frequency and the other system should work perfectly fine.

I got a low tire pressure warning on my Ford a few years ago and it turned out the spare tire was low. So it doesn't work by rotation.

I'm not sure about your Ford but the early GM system that only told you if a tire was low, and not which one or actual pressure, work by comparing rotation speed of the tires. It used the antilock brake sensors to determine wheel speed. If Ford uses the same type of system the TST won't affect it.

I agree, however having them on the TV is probably not as necessary as you would likely feel it if a tire was going flat on the TV as you would feel it, while no so on the trailer.

Deano, I think you will be fine. Try taking a sensor or 2 off the TT and put on the tow vehicle to try and to be sure it does not interfere before buying more, but I doubt it will interfere. 🙂

As a long-term solution, I'd consider the internally mounted transmitters from TST. The unknown (which maybe someone else can weigh in on) is whether you can disable Ford's and keep the tire alert light in the dash from being lit constantly.
