Tires tires tires
Well it is enough to make your head swim. :@ :h
My 2011 F-150 4X4 came with Goodyear Wranglers P 275/65R18 tires. For the last 32,000 miles (including 8000 towing miles) I can say they have had a good ride, good wear, good handling and except for a rock puncture they have been no problem. In another season it will probably be time to replace them.
Thinking replacement time would be a good time to upgrade to LT tires I checked the 2011 F-150 brochure for options and sure enough the off road option for my truck included Goodyear LT 275/65R 18C tires.:)
Digging deeper into the tire specs, the LT tire’s construction is recommended for towing, so I am thinking I will get improved tire capacity. Well not so!! It seems the Goodyear “Original Equipment” P 275/65R18 has a load rating of 2601 lbs. and a speed rating of 118 mph – not likely to happen. The Goodyear “Original Equipment” LT 275/65R18C had a lower load rating of 2535 lbs. and a speed rating of 112 mph – also not likely to happen. :S
So I guess the moral is not all LT tires by the same company are the same, indeed some of the Goodyear LT275/65/R18C tires were load rated in excess of 3400 lbs. however some of these also had very aggressive tread designs not particularly designed for interstate use.
Once again look before you leap, things are not always as simple as they appear. ;)
