Tow vehicle brake controller

Just bought a new TV. 1995 powerstroke!!!! Excited but when I wired up a new 7 way plug and no power on brake box. Started checking fuses and found 30 amp maxi fuse for trailer charging blown. Replaced fuse and still not working. Truck has two relays on side of pdist box under hood. Could those cause controller not to work? Led on controller was lighting up when i got truck. Now nothing. All other trailer related fuses are good on pdist box. Help!!

What Do The Fuses And Relays Control On Tow Ready Ford OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness # 118242

The fuses and relays that come with the Tow Ready Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way, part # 118242, does not control the cruise control, power mirrors, or the fog lamps.

The two 30 amp maxi-fuses are for the Trailer Tow Electric Brake and Trailer Tow Battery Charge fuse locations. The two relays are for the Trailer Tow Backup Lamp Relay and the Trailer Tow Battery Charge Relay.

The fuses and relays are located in the vehicles power distribution box (and trailer tow relay block on some models) located in the engine compartment on the drivers side;open the cover(s) to access the relays and fuses. You will want to check your vehicle owners manual for the exact locations of the fuses and relays.

I am including a link to the installation instructions on the # 118242 wiring harness.

The wiring harness # 118242 will not work on the Ford Super Duty trucks. You will need the Tow Ready Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way (Super Duty), part # 118243, for the Super Duty trucks.

I am including a video link to the wiring harness # 118242 being installed on a 2001 Ford F-150. At the 1:52 time mark is where they start to install the wiring harness.

  • On Chevys there's one wire for trailer charging and a second for trailer brakes. You should be able to find pics or video for your particular model on google.
  • Not sure on a Ford but check the cab mounted brake light for operation. Some trucks get power for part of the BC operation from this circuit plus an additional non-ignition circuit for manual over-ride operation.
