Toyota Tundra 5.7 Liter

I have a Toyota Tundra 5.7 SST and I am pulling a 29' Mallard M29 2017...6100 lbs dry weight. Am I good with hauling the trailer to South Dakota later this summer? Any input is helpful.

OP, consider this.

I will be towing a trailer weighing 6500 lbs ready to go with my Tundra. Tongue weight is 800 pounds. 3 passengers at 500 pounds, 2 dogs at 100 pounds plus my wife's purse. The yellow sticker on my door jam says my payload can be as much as 1410 lbs. Might have to leave the purse at home.

My 5.7 has tons of power, but in spite of being 3300 pounds under the 9800 lb tow weight rating of the truck, I am right on my payload number.

We have the same engine in our '08 Sequoia with the 4.10 axle ratio - towing is a breeze. As others have said, the part you will want to watch is the payload.

Most of my weight will be in the trailer. It will be just me, my wife, and my son in the truck most of the time.

The Tundra will do fine, mine was a 2010 with the 4.10 rear end and our first trailer weighed about 8000# loaded and we pulled fine this one closer to 9500# and it still pulled the mountains in Virginia like nothing. Ran out of payload was the main reason for getting rid of the truck.

My Tundra pulls our 7200 lb loaded trailer very well too. You will be fine.

Plenty of power to pull that tt with ease. My old '07 Tundra pulled my 8k trailer without breaking a sweat, just need to watch the payload. Don't be afraid to let it rev in the hills either.

What? I had a 2010 Tundra with the 5.7 and it had plenty of power. I bought my current trailer that weighs 8500 lbs and had PLENTY of power to tow. I just ran out of payload and the gas mileage was pretty poor.

My first trailer was a 6500 lbs trailer and the Tundra hauled that thing around with nary a problem. Did plenty of driving up and down the east coast mountains and never once lacked power. At one time going to the Poconos a tractor trailer was going pretty slow up a fairly steep pass. I couldnt' take it anymore and passed him. I looked down and was doing EIGHTY!!! I was stunned and slowed down, but we got up to that speed quickly and effortlessly.

That 5.7 is plenty of engine. You just need to make sure you have enough payload. 6000lbs trailer should have about 800lbs of tongue weight. That should leave you about 500-800 lbs of payload left for driver, passengers and gear. You have a second vehicle for all that payload, you should be perfectly fine.

Old matt must have had a problem or was towing a lot more weight than he thought. Just put it in tow/haul and go. If it starts to hunt pop it down into 4th and 5th. I have same truck with 4.10 rear.

Thanks for the input. I figured there would no problem, but sometimes better to make sure beforehand. Matt, was there an issue with towing 3000 lbs? That seems like an awfully light load to have trans issues with.

I used my 5.7 Tundra to tow my household stuff in a 16-foot cargo trailer from Texas to Arizona. Total additional weight probably 3000 pounds. There were times I spent 45 minutes with the trans in a low gear, and the engine spinning like crazy.

I like my truck, and will keep it, but I should have held out for the bigger engine.
