trans temp

i have a 2012 ram 1500, 5.7 hemi, 3.55 ratio, was wondering what the normal temp is for towing 6500lbs tt. what is hot temp, and what temp do i start getting concerned?
  • I have a 2012 Ram 2500 with 5.7 Hemi, 4.10 rear pulling about the same weight. Transmission temps runs about 170 degrees towing and not towing. I had a 2007 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi, 3.92 rear pulling same trailer and it would run about 180 degrees when towing.
  • You have synthetic fluid and temps up to 240 are not exceptionally high. The trans will lock out OD in an effort to save itself when it gets to about 260~265. At that point the fluid is dying and has very few miles left in it.
  • Hi temps drastically shorten fluid life. If you run at 250 but change the fluid every 15000 miles you would be OK...Mine runs about 150 empty, 175 towing and will get to 200 on a 90 degree day stuck in traffic. If you are seeing temps over 200 on the highway, the potential is there for 225+ which IMO is too hot and you should be looking at an aux cooler.
