I need to repair my AC unit on a Coleman Travel Trailer. I was told at the dealer not to get on the roof because it isn't designed to be walked on. But how am I to repair the unit without getting to it. I can't reach the cap cover screws from a ladder. What am I to do. I have to get on the roof to reach.

Yup, it's what I use. I cut a 1.5 inch sheet of extruded into 4 pieces. They are light wt, easy to move as needed, and yes, more comfy to kneel on. My roof is walk able, but the foam pieces allow more protection from shoes.

AC unit is all fixed, without walking on the roof. Now the wife can't complain because it's too hot. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Well, that isn't fair, I do complain too.

A painters plank is the safest. No chance of damaging a non walkable roof.

With any contact overlay, you have no idea how much it can support without failure. Why take the chance. Seems pretty cut and dried to me. Maunfacturer says roof is non walkable. What they mean whether you spread the weight out or not, it's still weight in the excess of what the roof was built to carry.

I know my unit specifically states what the maximum allowable weight is in my owners manual and getting physically on the roof, exceeds that weight.
Does it ever sit out in the snow?!

Mine? Never. Mine stays inside all winter. Actually the only time mine is outside is when I'm using it... Amazing how that works and preserves the roof and other parts too.

Far as snow load goes, snow load is not as concentrated in a small area as is size 10's walking around up there.

Well, I won't be walking on it. I am going to just sit on the edge so I can reach the cap cover on the AC. Thanks everyone for the advice.

I've been walking all over my non-walkable roof this weekend as I prep it for a fresh rubber coating. I just make a point of looking for the joists and spreading my weight. I think a board to distribute the weight while working on the AC would be just fine.

What painters planks are for. 2 suitable height step ladders and a painters plank between the ladders. You can rent a suitable length plank at any rental place, by the day, week or month and they are very reasonable.

I have the same roof issue and that is how I overcome it.

A really nice type of sheeting to use on the roof is a piece of 1" (+) extruded foam board. It will support your weight and is comfortable to kneel on.

Use small piece of Masonite to walk on, disperse the weight as you walk and it is smooth unlike plywood.
