Unusual . tire wear

The tires on the rear axle of my 30 ft Wildwood travel trailer wear on the inside with deep chatter marks (chunks missing, scalloping). This will be the second set of tires in 4000 miles. I can't seem to get a handle on this. Does any body have some thoughts or suggestions? Thanks...Mac
  • Same symptoms here 2 years ago. Local truck trailer shop replaced axle for $600.
  • If you can't perform an axle swap safely pay to have it done at a reputable shop. Don't go for cheapest. Swapping an axle is not difficult.

I had inside wearing and some cupping happen to ONE my OFF-ROAD POPUP 15-inch tires after around 20K miles.

I ended up replacing both tires on my single axle.

Got to looking at the wheel and noticed the tire weights were knocked off. I suspect the I59 Interstate in Northern ALA was the cause for losing my tire weight as there is a 50 mile stretch of Interstate there where the concrete road sections are buckled real bad. I would look back at my poor POPUP trailer and it would be bouncing up and down real bad no matter what speed I would run. I made about six runs across northern ALA in a two month period going to and from a work site. I also had to re-tighten my air condition four hold down screws as well.

I noticed all the big trucks on the road here was running the edge of the roads haha...

When I put the replacment tires on and got all balanced again I havent had any strange tire wear since... I also checked my shocks as well with no problems noted.

  • Yes, most likely the axle is bend and it needs to be straightened. They way they will do this is replace the axle. If the axle is undersized hopefully they will put larger ones on.
  • I've done this to three different trailers over a fifteen year span. The usually replies on the forum are that you need to have the axle aligned, or you need to have the axle straightened, or your bearings are bad, or your tires need to be balanced. In two out of three cases the dealer replaced the axle under warranty. In the third case I took it to a specialty shop that does truck and trailer suspension repairs. I asked about all the "cures" I have read on this forum over the years? Basically the reply was, "don't know who has been telling you that BS, your axle is bent and it needs to be replaced". Hopefully, you will find a cheaper, easier solution, but having been down that road a few times, I never got that lucky.
  • On ours they had to replace the dexter axle completely. Only one tire was wearing to the inside rapidly. Our dealer had pulled a tire and used a straight edge with measurements at four quadrants off of the hub, spinning it and measuring the four times at the same place on the frame. Obviously they were not all the same. Best of luck.........cC
  • Rear axle needs to be aligned.

Also rear axle bearings need to be checked......loose/worn bearings can cause cupping
