Update page 3: Tire pressure factory recommendations.......

I'm trying to get Ram to do something about the danged TPMS on later model 2500s. I understand that the TPMS used to have a toggle, that the pressure recommendations used to be for heavy and light loads, and that up until just a couple of years ago the computer could be reprogrammed to "ding points" other than factory.

Would you guys please help me compile a small list of factory inflation recommendations over the last decade or so?

With reference to GM....my 2016 Silverado 3500HD, GVWR 10800 has NO tire pressure monitoring system or idiot lights what so ever. The typical DIC Screen for the tire function is blank and there are no tire pressure warning lights. At first I was disappointed, but now I realized the potential pain with this system in a HD truck. Dealer said Feds don't require TPMS on GVWR over 10,000lbs.

Ahem, my 1500 is running P rated tires at a much lower pressure and still spins the tires maddeningly in the winter. Adding weight is the fix.

Well with my 2001 there is a supplement to the owners manual, that gives pressures for different loads.

Those that believe that one size (pressure) fits all, are likely the ones that complain during the winter that they need 400# in the bed to cut down on tire spin on wet roads. If they would just adjust their rear tire pressure for the load carried, they would likely see far less spinning, without adding any weight!

^Edit to above. Assumed bob has a GM, but appears it is a Ram.
What you're describing is possible if you've had the tpms thresholds reprogrammed.
Then as long as you're above that pressure, say after a low tire, the light will go off in a few key cycles.

That's cool. Never spent much time in newer GM HD pickups, but I can tell you I've seen plenty of tpms lights on them just the same as the other 2 mfgs.
I am certain that 2014 Fords and Rams do not have any sort of adaptive tpm systems though. So that is the problem.
Be interested to see if this is really the case with newer GM trucks across the board. Doubt it, since the system and its operational parameters were determined by the NHTSA, not the individual mfgs.
And where I worked, most all HD pickups rode on tires aired down significantly from the factory 65/80 or whatever it is and every truck had a constant tire light, Chebbies included.

I have yet to resolve through Ram Customer Care, so I found contact information for a corporate higher power. The following is the email I sent to Shawn Morgan. Also, here is a link to the complaint filed with NHTSA at safercar.gov.

(if anyone is interested.....) You'll have to select the "complaints" tab once on the site.

Dear Madam,

I really tried to avoid bothering you with this issue, but all other efforts have been both exhaustive and exhausting. Ram recommends a tire inflation pressure on the 2500 that is far too high for my typical "light duty" service. That wouldn't be an issue except that the tire pressure monitoring system keeps the dash warning light on all of the time when I reduced the pressure.

I tried to resolve this through the dealership but they were unable to reprogram the computer, though they had been able in years past.

I tried to work through the Customer Care system by first sending an email through RAM's web site. This was received and responded to but only to say they could not discuss my issue nor forward it to anyone else who might.

I called customer care and the person I first spoke with offered a few suggestions that yielded no result. I was eventually assigned a case worker who had me call Uconnect, who had me leave a message with the case worker, and who supposedly sent an email to encourage the case worker to respond. None of this to any effect.

What I would like to have is the TPMS on my 2016 Ram reprogrammed to alert for 50 psi front, and 45 psi rear. E range tires in the factory installed size should be fine at that pressure for daily driving according to both Firestone and The Tire and Rim Association. I'm fully aware that when I heavily load the truck I will also need to re-inflate the tires much closer to the recommended 60 psi front and 80 psi rear. If the computer can't be reprogrammed I would like to have the system or the dash warning light deactivated.

Is there any way you could help resolve this mess for me? The case information is:

On Cummins forum, there is a post on there somewhere about resetting the minimum pressure for a tire to whatever a person wants. The procedure was noted so that any dealer can implement the steps for a customer's vehicle. Most dealers claim ignorance about knowing whether or not they can reset the pressure.

how many is 'several'? What model?

There are lots of 'hidden' features these days, wish they were more forthcoming on details.. maybe there is a workaround for the issue..

Good luck getting it changed, but I commend you as its one of the dumbest safety features employed since early abs systems. (Which I named nbs systems back in the day cause if the road wasn't perfect, abs would act like someone just cut your brake lines!)
Earlier post is right. USED to be able to re program the tpms but ram updated their software to not allow this any longer.
I've re programmed 2013 and 2014 Fords and Rams but read on Cummins forum that this no longer can be done. Combine that with taking away the light load button on the Dodges really sucks.

My 12 Ram 2500 psi from the door placard says light load 45r-65f. Heavy load 80r-75f. I have no problem using the TPMS button on the dash to go between the two.

Capital idea! I haven't had any similar problem with my 1500, I can run the tires at 32PSI no problem, TPMS seems to kick in around 30 (haven't really confirmed that). I can see this being a HUGE program for 3/4ton and larger though....

Good luck, you'll need it... might have to change your handle to Don Quixote 😉
