Upgrading Tow Vehicle
My wife and I bought our first travel trailer earlier this year. It's 32' long and has a GVWR of 7,000 pounds. We've taken it on 6 trips so far this year, and I've been pulling it with my Ford F150 with the 5.4 engine. All of our trips have been within 2-3 hours of home down to southern Missouri and southern Illinois. I know I am close to the payload capacity of the truck by the time we are hooked-up and loaded. After getting some towing experience under my belt, I have decided it would be a good idea to upgrade to a 3/4 ton truck, most likely used.
I'm trying to decide between gas vs. diesel. I've been reading a lot over the last 2-3 weeks and I've learned a lot regarding the benefits and maintenance requirements of both. So, I'm not looking for a repeat of that information. I'm looking for some opinions on what I should do in my situation. Not only would the new tow vehicle be used to tow the trailer, but it would also be my "daily" driver. I put daily in quotes because I do not drive every day. I work from home. Therefore, I do not have a daily commute. When I'm not towing the trailer, most of my driving is to run errands on the weekend and maybe 1 or 2 during the week. It's not uncommon for me to currently go 2-3 weeks between fill-ups. In the past year, I have only put 7,000 miles on my truck.
Others have said that if you're towing, go with a diesel no matter what. While others say to run the numbers to see which is more economical. My wife has said that she would like to take the trailer to the Smokey Mountains next year. Would a 3/4 ton gasser be able to handle a long road trip into mountains?
Thanks in advance.
