It was getting late on the road and this was our closest option for a campground. Barnhouse Campground is free for 14 days, a nice little find in the middle of nowhere. There is some nice hiking with great scenery and views. Walked Charlie our cat a bit. Other cat scenes, grouchy and nice, included. A peaceful stay during a fast paced trip.

It's just a forest service campground. The unapproved ones have limits of 14 day stays. I think that's what OP meant.

Some USFS are free. Lots at 8, 12, 16, 24 dollars a night. A lot become free in the off season if not gated or posted closed.
BLM has lots of free camping.

freecampsites dot net is a resource to find free camping.

Why is it free

I can't tell you why it's free but!
There are free campgrounds out there.
We run into them from time to time ourselves.
