Water Heater Opinions Needed

I need to replace my water heater in my Layton. Its a DSI 6 gallon Suburban... gas ONLY..

Would it be a worth while upgrade to upgrade it to a model with Gas/Electric?

How big of a wiring headache would it be to do this?

Thanks!

Jeremiah
  • Thanks everyone. I went with just the standard DSI only water heater.

I like the idea of the lightning rod and may do that after the warrenty expires on the Suburban.

I'm just glad I will have a safe and reliable water heater now. LOL

    Thanks!

  • If you have the space and are going to replace it anyway you might want to consider a 10 gallon model.
  • If you camp with electric it's worth it. Not sure how to hook it up.
  • Got a spare slot for a dedicated 110V AC circuit breaker? (1400+watts/12 AMPS)
Pull wiring from AC panel/CB to a switch location
Pull wiring from switch to 120V AC junction box on heater

14 ga. wires Black, White & Green
Black wire from load side of CB to switch, from switch to junction box (should be factory wired from junction box to high limit t-stat then to normal limit t-stat then to one terminal screw on element)
White wire from common bus in AC panel then to junction box (should be factory wired to other terminal screw on element)
    Green wire for ground

    The wiring up is easy....
Accessing areas and pulling wire could be involved

Do a search for Suburban Installation Manual..it will show how to install and has wiring diagrams.
