Water heater question

Good evening everyone. I have installed my new water lines in the Shasta. I was looking at the water heater and it occurred to me that I didn't install a check valve in the cold water side. Is this a must ? I guess the only harm is I could start out with warm water in my bathroom at first, then it would go cold. Its a suburban 6 gallon.
  • If your concern is water flowing from tank back into cold water lines when water is being heated......shouldn't be a problem.
Water heater tank is designed with an 'air pocket' to absorb the swell from water heating. (Air compresses....water doesn't)

The PRV will drip when air pocket is lost.
  • It would be very easy to add one using a Shark Bite fitting.
  • Check valve, if used, goes in the hot water outlet, not the cold water inlet. Usually used when installing a one valve winterizing bypass.
