if the WIF light is illuminated -it is best practice to drain the appropriate filter or filter bowl. Nuisance WIF light illumination due to wiring condition is a maintenance issue that could hide a catastrophic event until the engine stops.
It really depends on what type sensor system is in play; if a float type like found on early generations of Duramax is illuminated there is a large volume of water present.
On electronic sensor type -it only takes a small droplet of water to close contact of the sensor.
WIF lights are for catastrophic event protection -ignore if you want, but the consequences can be expensive.
All the comments can lead you to minimize the need to pay attention, but anytime you purchase fuel -the risk of water is present and must be managed.
