I carry a folding step stool which gives me enough height to reach the latches even on my flat bed. I guess long monkey arms help too...
I set up the stairs before I pull down the awning. At the top of the stairs, I can reach the awning pull strap and walk down the steps to pull out the awning (same when putting it away). If you were out west, you would most likely use it more to keep your entry dry.
