It's empty space. Nothing in there. Lance discontinued this extension about 5 years ago. In the past is was considered a way to cut down the accumulation of dirt and dead air at the back of the camper, like an air dam. But, it is a way of cutting down costs, so it was axed.

On mine the its where the outside speakers and bright docking lights are mounted not to mention the upper mounts for the care free awning. It also has a rain gutter across the back. the whole shelf seems to be designed to keep rainwater from running down onto the back door
