There is self service for diesel. Maybe the attendant assumed gas since the owner wasn't pumping it.
Not all the minimum wage attendants know that. I just found out this last summer. I used to fill at the truck side of the truck stops, used to get a bit off for paying cash, but not seeing that discount lately.
