Very tragic and I feel for that family. I KNOW how they must feel ... completely devastated and loss of faith in humanity.
In 1982 I was living alone and experienced a house fire. I was able to get out of the house with just my bare body and a blanket (it started at night). I lost absolutely everything, including my bill-fold, money, car keys. Luckly he car was not parked in the garage. The house when completely down.
Now, I had some carpenter's tools in a back room that did not get completely destroyed and they were the only thing I could salvage. I had no insurance, I was pretty young and dumb back then.
A local, nearby church supplied me with some second hand clothing (which I was extremely grateful for) and they let me store my salvaged wood working tools in the basement of their church, in a store room until I could figure out what to do next. A friend let me stay with them, which gave me somewhere to sleep.
About a week later, someone broke into the church. They stole the amplifier system, microphones, and a few choice items made of brass and such, and ... of course ... my carpenter tools in that store room, along with some other things.
Now I was loosing faith in humanity pretty fast.
Having nothing left (by way of physical property... really ... nothing!) I quit my job (working at McDonlds) and enlisted in the Army a week after the theft. All I took with me was a small cloth bag with a tooth brush, an extra pair of underware, and a clean t-shirt, comb, and deodorant.
He I am 34 years later, a grandfather of 5, have a wonder wife now who is my best friend, have a great house we love in a location that's wonderful, and enjoying a good life, with even the luxury of an RV.
Did my faith in humanity ever change? Well, it never went back to the innocence I had before that. I've learned to be skeptic of everyone until proven different. The theft did change me. But life did get good again too!
So, I know, eventually, for this family, life will get good for them too! But still ... it's a sad story!
