Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Without going into too much painful detail, we had a mishap several week-ends ago. While working with sand bag crews on the Mississippi River, the truck and camper fell into the flood waters as a road collapsed. Because of a number of issues dealing with the wrecker truck, we had to release the camper as the truck was reeled up over the bank. The good news is that the truck is as good as new after a thorough rinsing, inspection of brakes, etc. The bad news is that the camper was thoroughly drowned. A lot of people had far worse trouble than we did, so we consider ourselves lucky. The floods are ongoing as I write.

Our planned trip to Montana in June is called off. heh.

However, I have now convinced my dear Jane that its time to really update the TC. After drying for several days we pulled out the interior. Amazingly the Zolatone paint that I had applied last year is good as new after a cleaning.

Without burdening the TC family overmuch, I'd like to ask some advice other than don't park too near a flood :-).

My DW was overjoyed that I had a plan for the bathroom: a composting toilet developed by Nature's Head http://www.natureshead.net/. Our holding tank was practically unusable and there was no real grey water tank on the 67 Avion. Our plan is to rip out the bathroom and install one of these and converting the blackwater to a greywater tank. Any experience with this?

Finally, the roof. I admit that I have not really done the work I should have. Now, I need to remove the various sealants on the roof and repair it. We are also setting up for a solar installation. Any advice as to this?

Here's hoping I have posted the pictures correctly. And many thanks in advance for your advice.

I'm looking for an extra set of horizontal propane tanks so I can keep some filled ones on hand and swap them as needed. Has anyone converted to some other system? Any "parts" C-11s out there?

I think that there are several folks looking for those tanks. They are hard to find these days.

I suggested to Steve that the Avions camp together at the Expo in Flagstaff...

I too would love to make it... But just driving down to Flagstaff would take me over a week, then just to get to a highway to drive on is a 14 hour ferry ride to Homer, AK which is about $1200 for my truck, camper and family of 6.

It would be alot of driving, at least 3 weeks off work, and alot of $$$... Hope to hear lots of good trip reports though!!!

We are starting out 5000 mile away and it is actually a quicker journey for us :B - though we have the advantage of not attempting to bring our TC - that would take a while :E

We've got 3 Avions coming to my knowledge. I'm really looking forward to seeing them (Sally can't wait - she's dying to look around them).

We hope to have some spare spaces so come and find us. If not then you can still camp nearby and come and socialize.

Oh, but don't worry Garry - there will definitely be a trip report - you know me :W

Those look really good . My plastic ones were cracked also but I salvaged them by using a SS band clamp around them .
Curious why you didn't use aluminum . Are you not concerned about the galvanic action ? I suppose in AZ it's not much of a problem . Do you still have the upper part of the antenna ?

I used bronze because it was available off of ebay for $4.50 each. They are the oil inpregnated type. I set it up different than the originals because I let the flanged bronze bushings rotate in the aluminum mount instead of around the aluminum pole. I drilled and tapped 4, 1/4"x20 holes on each bushing so I can lock them down with a wing bolt.
Yes, I do have the original antenna which I'm keeping stored away. I'll probably never use it. I also put a stainless steel bolt on the bottom of the outer tube, in case one of the inner busings come loose, the inner poles won't slide out of the bottom.

As Sleepy said, this is turning out to be a huge event. I believe that the Great Whazoo will be part of our group among many others. So, Avions, I hope to see you there. Looking at you Ticki.

I finally started to fix the TV antenna setup. The original plastic bushings only lasted about 40 years. I replaced them with 4 Bronze bushings that should last a few hundred years. LOL

I need to get some pictures of it and then I will reinstall it onto the camper. I'm not going to put the antenna back on it, but I think that I will use it as a flag pole.

Also a minor setback on the greywater tank. It has a crack near the outlet. Since it's ABS, it should be easy enough to repair. Frustrating though.

ticki2, they must have widened the compartment if your tanks are touching. My compartment is tight enough the way it is. I even put some clear tygon tubing over my all thread rod to keep anything from rubbing.

To eliminate the ignorance problem, I bought a couple of POL to ACME adapters so they have a hard time messing it up. LOL

Do the propane dealers fill right through the adapter using an ACME threaded fill hose? Or do they take it off and fill through to POL?

The last time I had them filled was the time I had them inspected, even though they are ASME tanks. They were filled before I put the ACME adapters on. I plan on having them filled through the adapters.

I am in the middle of repainting the bathroom. As I posted upthread, I've repaired the plastic pieces and repainted them with two-part polyurethane, and my Artistic Director decided that I have to repaint the walls before putting them back in.

I did some experiments and came to the conclusion that, with a solvent wash followed by light standing, alkyd paint will adhere. I'm using Interlux Brightside paint, a one-part urethane that is much easier to work with than the two-part "perfection" that I used on the plastic pieces.

I guess the C-10s had a plastic medicine cabinet. Mine is stapled up pieces of 1/4" ply. I reinforced it with a coat of epoxy before painting.

The other photo shows the new ABS drain plumbing, and my mods to the freshwater plumbing. The original plumbing had the copper tubing flare terminated and connected right to the faucet with a flare to 1/2" nptf adapter. Today's nylon faucet shanks don't seal so well with that setup so I'm switching to the now-standard flex lines with the braid cover. The copper lines have to be fastened to something so I added a support, and quarter-turn shutoffs for installation and service convenience.

With the old copper lines I had to shine them up with 400 grit sandpaper to get them to seal to the compression fitting on the quarter-turn shutoff.
