All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Roll Call Alaska 2014We drove from Fort Nelson to Fort St. John in a rainstorm, could not believe the mud! Speeding pickups passing us over double yellow lines, really taking chances to gain a few minutes. We looked like we had gone through a mud bath by the time we reached Fort St. John! We stayed in a horrible RV Park in Fort St. John, parked in a huge puddle... definitely would avoid that area in the future.Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014What do you wish you'd known before heading to Alaska? I wish I'd known how expensive the gas was compared to what I was paying in Montana, esp around the Muncho Lake area where I had to get gas (small gas tank in my Jeep) - also wish I'd known how nice the provincial parks were, I made reservations in a lot of campgrounds (worried about caravans, busy weekends) and wish I'd stayed in provincial parks in many instances. The reviews on the internet are a must to read. Everyone should travel with milepost, invaluable.... What words of wisdom would you share with other RVers planning their Alaska trip? Slow down on the rough roads, pay attention to those little orange flags and posts! Slow down and enjoy the scenery and have bug spray handy when you stop to photograph bears along side the road... eat in the small family owned restaurants along the way - most are surprisingly good! Travel with a sense of humor - you never know what is around the next bend. What were your favorite activities in Alaska? Enjoyed our stay in Fairbanks - don't think I'd do the Riverboat cruise again, a bit too commercial for my taste. Visit the museums, visitor centers and talk with the people about things to do. take lots of pictures... we enjoyed our stay in Denali in Teklanika for 4 nights over July 4, glad we had reservations there as they were booked! Get the TEK pass and use it everyday to go out and see the park and what it has to offer. Drive to the Arctic Circle, at least to cross it and get your certificate from BLM Dottie at the BLM center at the Yukon Bridge. Also, get your certificate at Delta Junction visitor center once you have driven the Alaskan Highway - corny but fun! Try to go up AK highway and return on the Cassiar - we didn't and found it to be a bit boring but lovely drive. I know Kelowna is not in Alaska but we stayed there 9 days before returning home - what a delight! Do a tour with Sam Wilson in his '56 Caddy and enjoy the good eats and wine. We traveled for 2 months in a Jeep, pulling an 18 foot R-pod with 2 golden retrievers and had a ball!Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014NewallaBus.... I'm sorry, may have typed the wrong thing.... we got dungeness crab for $6.50/lb at www.hainespacking.com, I think the halibut was $19.99/lb... sorry for the confusion.... It was frozen but freshly caught, dungeness crab was live, best price I've ever seen.....Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014We had the worst day of the trip yesterday, driving from Fort Nelson to Fort St John in the rain all day... muddy pulloffs, muddy trucks passing us and spraying us with mud, the jeep and the r-pod are filthy - then to top it off, we stayed in Fort St John at the Rotary Park RV CG and parked in a really wet, puddles everywhere parking lot because we had dogs! It was a dump, so disappointed - the only positive thing was fairly decent internet... we did not care for the experience at all, we aren't picky campers but it was the pits! Anyway, had a nice drive today - now in Prince George then onto Jasper/Banff for a week... that was the "hiccup" of the trip!Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014We are in Haines AK for 6 nights - has been cool, rainy first 2 days but at least the rain has stopped for a while now.... enjoying halibut ($19.99/lb) and dungeness crab, which is only $6.50/lb here... wish I could take a boatload home with me! The coastline and fishing village are misty, magical - great photo ops! Fireweed blooming, fisherman are out in the Lynn Canal, I believe it is called, trying to catch some fresh salmon. They are counting the salmon at a weir set up over the channel, have counted over 17,000 since May 27... saw a few eagles, no bear yet. We opted not to camp at Oceanside, talk about a crowded parking lot - nice on the water but a bit too cozy for me. We are at Haines Hitch Up RV Park, nice spacious, grassy sites. They are not putting anyone next to us, maybe because of our longer stay? Don't know but we like it.... We are heading to Jasper/Banff when we leave here... safe travels everyone!Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014 ss573 wrote: reelgalnita wrote: We are in Fairbanks - could not believe the rain that started yesterday morning and continued through the night, a real downpour for most of night... We are at Rivers Edge CG........ WOW!!! We were at that same RV park 3 days ago before coming down to Anchorage. I hope you, and all others there, don't get flooded out !! Sorry to hear that. We were in site J-10. We are in J13, must have been neighbors - we are camped in an r-pod TT, reddish orange jeep... we arrived Friday, June 27... sorry we did not meet... water was high when we arrived but receded, tonight higher than ever... could not believe how flooded the campground was this am, had to drive through deep water to get to office area, that area near dumpster was flooded as were some of the campsites...Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014We are in Fairbanks - could not believe the rain that started yesterday morning and continued through the night, a real downpour for most of night... We are at Rivers Edge CG and awoke to find many campsites underwater, luckily no one was in the tent area - totally flooded. Our little spot is high and dry. We were taking a ride out to Chena Hot Springs this morning, noted how really, really high the Chena River was, many fishing sites closed. We came upon a man standing along a flooded section of road, we drove through and he told us that unless we wanted to spend the night there, we should turn around now and leave. We did... the Chena here is really high compared to what it looked like 2 days ago... now onto Denali, doesn't look promising....Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014we have been camping at the River's Edge RV Park in Fairbanks for the past few days - constant rain since yesterday morning... camping in an 18 ft r-pod with 2 wet golden retrievers is such fun! It looks like weather may improve, moving on to Teklanika in Denali in a.m. for a 5 night stay... My sign fell off my spare tire in back - we are traveling in a reddish orange jeep pulling an r-pod - wave as you go by....Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014So, We drove the Dalton Highway from north of Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle line, amazing trip up - the entire trip fro Fairbanks was about 400 miles, took us 12 hours... we did the usual photo stops, did not see any wildlife, appreciated the big semis slowing down as they passed us so we did not get a cracked windshield... something we wanted to do forever, got our certificate from Dottie at the Yukon River Bridge Visitor center... a beautiful day, a bit dusty on drive back, some mud but overall a good trip!Re: Roll Call Alaska 2014We arrived today in Fairbanks, presently staying in Rivers Edge RV Park, site J13.. wow, the road between Burwash Landing, YT and the border was rough... drove 25 mph at many areas d/t frost heave... did was the rig at Tok, a deal at $13 for car and trailer (of course we just have an 18 ft r-pod and jeep) but it was still caked on there... have seen 2 Roll Call RV's, talked with one today... we lost our sign so look for us - a reddish-orange Jeep Moab with an 18 ft r-pod travel trailer, apparently can't miss us as many people we meet up with say they have seen us along the highway... here for 6 nights and then hopefully onto Denali for a 5 night stay in Teklanika if weather holds....
