My truck is a 1975 GMC 3500 with a 454 engine. I've never had a camper on it but have pulled five horses in a trailer coast to coast so I know it is up to the job. I like to say it can pass anything on the road except a gas station! So swing out brackets for the front jacks is extremely important to have ahead of time. Also I will have the truck fitted with the proper frame attached tie downs (specific to my type of truck) ahead of time. And remove the tailgate... I might do that right now. Don't need it anyway. I read in here somewhere that someone used a stall mat from Tractor Supply in the bed of the truck. Is that a good bet? I know they are thick and strong. I have no bed liner. I do have a fifth wheel hitch to take off. I'm not worried about plugging in for power except maybe to check that things are in working order. The truck is very old and needs body work and a paint job to look nice. But I don't care. I'm taking care of all the mechanical things and getting new tires, hoses and belts etc. Its just a good old truck and won't run one bit better after the paint......hopefully I can find an older slide in camper that is sound and doesn't have a leaking roof, that would look the part. Until I know that I really want to travel this way I don't want to spend a lot of money on a fancy class c motor home or a $25,000 truck camper....I just want a place to sleep and cook and a good roof. A toilet and shower are nice but I don't need them and with out them the camper could be shorter and not hang way over the back. Also don't want one that hangs way over the front...it only needs to sleep one.Tie downs and loadingI'm sure this topic is covered elsewhere. But I cannot find it. Could some one please explain to me exactly what I need for tie downs to carry a slide in truck camper on my old dually? Do I purchase and have them installed prior to buying the camper? Do people sell used truck campers along with the required equipment? And can the tie downs be installed by anyone.....for example, me? Or do I go to a shop to have that done. I'll soon be ready to purchase a camper but I don't want to drive a long distance and find out I can't bring it home! Thanks in advance.Re: How was this one tied down before it flew off !New seat covers! Ha!Re: OUTSIDE SHOWERAh! Okay that makes perfect sense! I can see where you would not want to fill up your grey water holding tank. I guess if I did not have an outside shower I could wash my dishes in a dish pan and dump that water too. I just thought those outside showers were an "alternative" to having an indoor shower. And I SURE don't want to shower out in public!OUTSIDE SHOWERMaybe this is a stupid question so please don't laugh. Exactly what is an "outside shower"? I only ask because I just looked at an ad for a class C and it mentioned an outside shower. And I see the outside shower located on the outside of the RV. But the inside pictures show a bathroom with a toilet and what looks like a hand held shower head as well. Whats the point? Why would I want an outside shower anyway?Re: Age restrictions Bill.Satellite wrote: If they have the 10 year rule you should look somewhere else to stay! If they really don't want you there you should just keep your money in your pocket and visit a campground where they remember what camping means. One campground wanted us to send pictures of the coach, including all sides and the ROOF! Oh, heck no! We went somewhere else and so should you! This is wonderful advice! I have been wondering about the same thing. I recently read about a park that would not accept pop ups, tent camping or older RVs. I guess they may not have the facilities to accept tent camping, so I give them a pass there. But what is wrong with a pop up camper or an older RV? I'll probably be putting an older (but good condition) truck camper on my dually. I guess I wont be welcome at those places. That will suit me fine. I would be happier with friendly people in older RVs (or tent campers) than people in beautiful new RVs who want to judge others. Oh that does sound very sour. And I am sorry for sounding that way. I know a lot of people with beautiful newer RVs who are still kind, friendly and do not judge. Still I think I will spend most of my time at campgrounds and state parks instead of the fancier RV parks.Tire Valve Stem ExtendersI have a dual wheel truck and will be putting extenders on the tire valve stems. I can't check the air or add air to the inside rear wheels now unless I remove the outside wheels. Even the outside wheels are difficult to work on. Do most of you use the extenders? Do you use metal or rubber stems? My valve stems are metal currently. Any advice?Re: This was me 34 years ago!Thank you krobbe!Re: Another try to post 34 yr old picYes, 17 years. We lived in MD, WVA, VA, FL, LA, IL, AZ, NM, CA, WA, OR, KY. And everywhere in between! Then we bought a farm in KY, which I do love, but I have found the mowing and yard work and general upkeep to be too much work and too little fun. I miss having a tiny space to keep clean, no yard to mow and low, low bills. It is not for everyone I know. Living and enjoying life means more to me than acquiring material things. And since I don't have children to leave property to, and no need to stay in one area.....the vagabond lifestyle seems to fit.
