As dturm noted, you could get a "grinding" noise when the wheel with grip kicks in. Could also get the same noise during tight turns. If you hear this, have the rear tansaxle fluid changed. That will stop it. Current CRV: 2005 CRV 156K miles, 60K towed. Purchased used off leaseback. Last CRV: 1988 168K when turned in. 30K towed. Also purchased used off leaseback. No mechanical issues with either other than normal wear and tear. Will buy 2013, again used, when they start showing up on the lots. Great vehicle. WayneRe: Maine to Nova ScotiaNCWriter and Padlin, Sorry to hijack an old thread, but I have questions about the ferry from Campobello to Deer Island and then to New Brunswick main land. I have researched the ferry websites and watched multiple YouTube videos of the ferries. First, is there any risk to boarding or unboarding the ferry with a 30 foot motorhome based on the tide? Low tide looks a bit challenging. If it is breezy, how much salt spray or heavy water would I expect getting on the vehicles? I expect to have perfect weather, of course, but just in case, I would attempt to take the ferries early in the day before wind would develop. Tide could work against me however. WayneRe: Route 114 to Alma New Brunswick - Condition? Thanks CloudDriver. Your suggestions have been researched and are added to the list. You will see me posting many more pointed questions on this forum as my research continues. There is no better place to get "been there, dome that" feedback.Re: Route 114 to Alma New Brunswick - Condition?Thank you both for responding. And thanks CloudDriver for the pictures. from your descriptions, roads are probably not much worse that here in connecticut. I guess you didn't see trailers and motor homes with broken axles and trails of parts as warned by the poster on Trip Advisor. Planning on doing Maine coast from Freeport to Lubec, Campobello Island, Saint john and the Fundy National Park. Lots to do in2 weeks. Might need more! WayneRoute 114 to Alma New Brunswick - Condition?Researching 2014 trip to Fundy NP. Read on Trip Advisor that the road for the TCH to Alma is very rough. Poster said to avoid if trailering or in Motorhome. Anyone have comments?Re: Maintenance Free battery - Blew the caps off?MEXICOWANDERER,You are right on target. I did not do a deep enough investigation when I purchased the batteries. They are definitely the batteries you describe. The batteries Winnebago put in original equipment were also Marine/RV Deep cycle, so I just replaced the same type with a different brand. I was told by the dealer they were maintenance free. I never checked fluid levels in the 6 years before I replaced with the Costco batteries. (I didn't think the caps came off.) The only difference is that I replaced the original converter/charger with the 4 stage Progressive Dynamics 6 months ago and always had the rig plugged in since then. I had never left it plugged in between trips before with the old converter. I made the change because of the claim that it would not damage the battery if left plugged in full time. Today I pried the tops off the second battery and all cells are full. No way to check the damaged battery. Not only did the caps blow off, but the case split as well. It certainly had fluid in it when it blew, it was everywhere in the battery compartment. So, I don't know if it was fluid level or not that caused the damage. I got the battery compartment neutralized, stripped, and re-painted over the last two days. Chassis battery and non-damaged battery put in so I have power to winterize, change engine and generator oil and prepare for winter. Monitored voltage at the Progressive Dynamics output periodically all day and it is operating normally. No room for 6V so I will decide over winter on AGM or a set of Trojan Deep Cycle in the spring. And yes, I will now be adding battery fluid level checks to my periodic maintenance list. This has been very educational to me. Thanks to all that participated. WayneRe: Maintenance Free battery - Blew the caps off? Thanks to all that replied. Just for kicks, I'm going to get them both tested. I am just thankful that 1) it happened at home, 2) it didn't happen in the middle of winter when I would have a challenging time cleaning it up, or worse, wouldn't notice for a month until I went to exercise the Generator. On the bright side, I am now in the market for true deep cycle batteries rather than start/deep cycle that were in there. And, I perhaps have learned to look beyond lowest price as well.Maintenance Free battery - Blew the caps off?Sometime last week one of the house batteries (in parallel) blew its caps and deposited acid throughout the battery compartment while plugged in parked at the house. By caps I mean the covers over the top openings. There are two "caps", each covering 3 openings in the top of the battery. Motorhome has been plugged whenever it was not being used for the last 6 months. I had installed Progressive Dynamics Converter with 4 stage charger 6 months ago and to my knowledge it has been functioning normally. House batteries Costco Marine/RV deep cycle "maintenance free" and are 4 years old. It was 2 weeks since the last trip. Voltage at the battery after "explosion" was normal 13.4 v when plugged into house 120v power and 12.8 when unplugged. Only one of the two batteries blew the caps. One of the caps blew right out of the battery compartment and was laying on the ground under the vehicle. I talked to Progressive and was told that if the converter/charger is providing 13.4 volts, the converter did not cause the problem. Did I just have a battery that suddenly failed internally? Still cleaning up the mess with baking soda. Sanding and re-painting will commence this weekend.
