All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: 1986 Dodge B250 Camperwagon | Engine And Tranny QuestionsMaybe change the rear end ratio? I doubt it'll hurt the mileage much more than a 360 or a hop up of your 318. Especially if you're going to a 4x4 conversion, you'll probably want it anyway. Just match your likely front axle ratio. JimRe: 1990s dodge chassisBe sure to read all the links under item 8 in the class B forum FAQ's here http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/19953525.cfm . A few of the late 1990's thru 200? had some very squirrely handling characteristics that were difficult or impossible to cure. Test drive _before_ you buy! JimRe: Onan 2600 generatorStart by suspecting the fuel filter, since it's cheap & easy, and fits the symptoms well. If it's running good while it runs, it's probably not a gummed up carb, but Seafoam or Techron won't hurt. That leads to three other possibilities: clogged spark arrestor screen in the exhaust (doesn't quite fit symptoms, but can be DIY'd), failing fuel pump (fits symptoms, $$, and generator has to come out), or voltage regulator (somewhat fits symptoms, $$, can be DIY'd, troubleshooting chart in Onan manual & on Flight Systems website). JimRe: Systems inspection and readinessChevy or Dodge? '03 RT could be either. 'underutilized' could be a Dodge with handling issues. JimRe: Onan 4KY Consuming Oil After Change, Breather Tube/CrankcaseMore of a general comment than based on what I've read here, be darn sure you're checking the oil correctly. All 3 of my 2800's (the only Onan I'm really familiar with) have required checking the level with the dipstick plug unscrewed and sitting on the edge of the hole. This makes a significant difference in getting the oil level correct. I actually wrote the correct method on mine in silver Sharpie. Check your manual. Be sure to allow enough drain-back time. I agree with changing back to dino, and using a straight 30W if you don't have an unusual climate. I've always used Castrol in air cooled engines, from lawn mowers to VW Bugs. The oil has to be going somewhere. If you were burning that much oil, I'd really expect smoke and the spark plug to foul pretty quickly. Assuming that it's sitting level, a leak should show up as at least wetness on the bottom of the pan very quickly. Almost has to be the crankcase vent system, and I'm not familiar with yours. Best of luck with it. JimRe: HorseTrailer&M-BSprinterCan't tell for sure if you're asking about a bare delivery van, a passenger van, or a full-up class B. But if it's the latter, I seriously doubt it. If you need towing capacity and compact living quarters, consider a Tiger CX or other Tiger (small C based on a 1-ton pickup). JimRe: Onan generator only runs with switch held inIf you can get it onto a lift, replacing the voltage regulator in an underslung Onan Microlite 2.8 or 2.5 isn't hard, just patience-& dexterity-challenging, blindly feeling for a small tapped hole in the base pan that has NO lead-in or countersink, with the end of the screw. That's a real, real PITA (mine have only had one, a Torx). Replacing the VR on ramps or the ground might be beyond all but the slimmest & most flexible. Dropping the generator _might_ be worth it, but all you achieve by having the cover off is a slightly better working angle accessing that dam'd screw hole. You do need some minimal electrical savvy & a multi-meter to go thru the troubleshooting steps outlined in the Onan manual or on the Flight Systems website. I'd be darned sure that's what the issue was before buying one and going to the pain of replacing it. Jim H.Re: help deciding on Class BBe sure to read all the fine print on the rated towing capacity. IIRC, in the early 2000's RT Chevy brochures gave a figure that (noted in the fine print) was based on driver only, nearly empty tanks (including gas), no factory options (generator, awning), and no cargo. I suspect other B makers may do the same. JimRe: High top conversion van Handling in the windSwitchback & Ted66, after a _lot_ of work, sweat, money, and a few tears, I traced much of my '99/'00 Roadtrek Dodge's evil wind & curve handling to soft sidewalls on Michelin LTX tires, even in load range E. Jim H.Re: Kitchen Module for Van Ford / Sprinter / ChevyI think www.moreheaddesignlab.com _used_ to offer DIY van interior modules for at least the 1st generation Sprinter. I'm not sure he still does, but a quick phone call should answer that. You may or may not get an answer before start of business Monday, considering the holidays. Jim H.
