I'm just one of those who likes to be prepared, and who knows when even a new MH will break down in the middle of nowhere. As far as expense goes, water weighs something like 8.24 or 8.34 lbs per gallon (not home and don't have the exact number at work), so you can always do the math to see the possible budget impact.Re: Adaptive Cruise ControlI have used it on a friend's coach. It is nice, but I personally would save my money. As already mentioned, in heavy traffic on a coach it causes those holes that invite so many 4-wheelers to just jump in front of you.Re: CB channels...Just because! If we take the mic out of driver's hands, you put everyone out of business... PD, FD, EMS, delivery, taxi, yada, yada, yada. While I know the point can be argued, talking into a mic is not as distracting as talking on a phone. With all that said, this is why some jurisdictions (my first life job, DC included) call it "Distracted Driving". When it first came about in DC, we were taught that it applied to anything that distracted the driver... eating, tuning the radio, make up in the mirror, etc.Re: CB channels... KO wrote: ... Yes there is room for CB and RV forums on your smart phone - but CB is still king when you need to know what is happening in your immediate area now. x2, this will always be the case. I am one who has always preferred to have and not need concerning a CB. As an east coaster, any time that I travel through Richmond, VA or Jacksonville, FL, I'll hit the on switch and ask which is better "round the circle or through the middle"? Can very easily make an hour or more difference.Re: Who tows a CRV??The main thing to consider is transmission. According to Family Motor Coaching's "Towables" list, NONE of the automatic Subarus are 4-down towable. So if you're going with an automatic, the decision is already made for you unless you go with one of those aftermarket transmission kits. This might not be the case for the older Subarus, but it does apply to the '14s.Re: Registration of a 2014 coach on a 2013 chassisWhile I don't have the model year dilemma as mentioned here since my chassis and motorhome are the same year, Maryland did title my '14 Tiffin as a '14 Freightliner.Re: good quality 2-way radios with headset recommendations Executive wrote: I really can't see how a properly used set of cell phones are less safe than a set of walkie talkies...a cheap set of walkies require one to push a button to talk, thereby causing more interference with your attention to driving than a cell phone with an earpiece....Dennis I think it's more the matter of convenience, not safety. As already mentioned, using a two-way radio is quick when using a cell phone requires the caller to pick up, dial (even if the number is preprogrammed), wait for the call to go through, and finally be answered. With a single button push, I can warn those (more than one) following me about an imminent danger ahead, and they don't have to do anything but hear me... and none of this addresses the possibility of marginal or non reception areas.Re: Wheelbase ratioThe one I've seen the most is 53%, but I have also seen some that say 50%. Then there are those who will say that the whole length to wheelbase ratio is a myth, but personally I choose to go by 53%. If you look at the second question under the FAQs at Henderson's Line-Up, a pretty good authority in steering and suspension, you will see that while they don't give a specific ratio, they do talk about shorter wheelbases being a contributing factor to porpoising.Re: Class A Fuel Mileage Mr.Mark wrote: Just curious, why would your ISL have only 380 hp? Our ISL has 425 hp. For comparison to the OP, we weigh just over 40,000 lbs. and have averaged about 7.0-7.2 mpg over 65,000 miles pulling a 3,400 lb. toad. I like going about 60 mph. MM. What I have heard (but not confirmed) is that Cummins has dropped the ISC rather than recertifying it to the EPA standards for the new model year. So now they have "toned down" ISLs to replace the no longer manufactured ISC. What I do know is that for 2014, all 40 foot and under Phaetons have the 380HP ISL as standard. The good thing about that is for $$$$$$$, you can now flash your 380HP ISL up to 450HP (not for me). This is already being "exploited" by dealers who are offering higher HP Phaetons brand new off the floor (Tiffin Phaeton Mountain Tamer Edition Class A Diesel Motorhomes). So to put this back in topic area, I haven't had my Phaeton in any of the western mountains yet, but I'm extremely happy with the performance of my 380HP in the eastern mountains. I'm am not about to pay $2,500 - $3,000 just to flash my ISL so I can get better, but unneeded HP, and pour more $$$ out the tailpipe.
