So I take it from the last responses that it might be a better idea to run multiple panels instead?Re: 2005 Horizon 40AD solar upgradeI am still not sure about the current rating of my existing charge controller. from what I can find though, I think it is unlikely to be anything that will work with my upgrade. It is a multipurpose unit made by Ventline and was probably sold by the thousands capable of being nothing more that a bell or a whistle that would cause a prospective sucker, I mean buyer (like me) to be impressed and just have to have it. The unit controlled everything from tank levels and battery condition monitors to pump and hot water controls, the solar controller being only one small part. My issue now is being able to strip it from the other systems so I can incorporate a separate controller and leave everything else that the unit does in a working state. If I manage that, I may consider running something from the new controller unit to the charge LED in the old one just so it still lights up when charging. I would have added some pictures of my unit as well as a pdf I found online with some limited information but the add image feature here seems a bit beyond my capabilities. The part number for my multipurpose control board is Ventline L5130-02 Thanks again for the help folks!Re: 2005 Horizon 40AD solar upgrade Bobbo wrote: We need to know what gauge the wire is going from the roof down to the solar controller, and then on to the battery. (My 2017 Airstream has 10g wire, but Airstream is now putting 8g wire there.) Thanks for the quick reply Bobbo! That is a good point and a great place to start, I will have a peek at it and post the wire size in the next couple days if the weather holds out. I do think that changing out the wire for a larger size is something that I could manage to do without having to tear anything out to the point of it leaving any obvious signs that the work had been performed, but that does still leave me needing to know about the capacity or "ampacity" if you will of the other stock components(other than the wiring itself). Thanks again and I love having this forum where people can share what they have already experienced regarding so many things!2005 Horizon 40AD solar upgradeI have wanted to upgrade the solar panel on my 2005 Horizon 40 AD pretty much since the day it left the lot new. The tiny little factory installed solar panel has never done much more than light up the red LED indicator when in sunlight. Does anyone know what the maximum wattage is that I can run through the stock factory equipment? When at all possible, I like to keep things original in appearance and if I can use the stock equipment to handle the solar charging then I would prefer to do so. I don't know if you can actually get it off without removing the sofa, however. I am thinking this is the ticket. There is a fake cabinet door beside the sofa. I don't think I will be able to access it it without removing the sofa though. Removing the only drawer in the unit only allows me to see part of the release cable run but not the latch itself. Looks like the sofa is on its way out. Thanks for the advice folks!Stuck Countertop ExtenderHi Folks, I have a 2005 Itasca Horizon 40AD. In the galley it has a counter top extension that pulls out with additional cupboard storage built into it. It appears that the cable for the release latch has come loose from the latch mechanism and I am unable to pull the unit open. What would I need to do to gain access to the latch mechanism so that it can be manipulated manually and then repaired? At this point I have not yet been able to even locate where the latch is mounted but it is obviously somewhere behind the sliding portion of the unit. Thanks! The extremely hard to find part I can believe without a doubt. I am still looking but now will concentrate more on the area just in front of the closet and I am assuming above the carpeted step? Thanks for the input!Need advice on accessing engine - 2005 Horizon 40ADHello folks, I searched for this topic and did not see it anywhere but do apologize it has been discussed before. I have some wiring to do that requires I find a source of power on only when the key is in the on position. This power will only be used as a signal source to a new relay I am installing in the electrical bay of my 2005 Itasca Horizon 40AD. As the electrical bay is right beside the engine on this rig, I figured I could find a close easy source there with the engine. Problem is, the only access hatch I have ever opened before is the small one in the closet and that does not expose enough of the engine compartment to do what I need to do. Does anyone know how to get to and open the larger access panel under the raised carpeted area between the closet and the bed? From the bottom side, I can see it is held down with screws the same as the smaller panel that I already have open, but I can't figure out how to remove the carpeted step covering it. Thanks in advance! Gene in Arizona.
