I'm assuming that you were checking the socket. Try checking the wire before the socket. I had a similar issue with a Chevy Suburban and found that the rear taillight sockets are known to go bad.
I've done both: tow 4 wheel down and on a trailer. Biggest problem with the trailer is having space at the destination to store the trailer, otherwise I would prefer the trailer.
Something similar happened to me. I removed the panel that the bypass valve was mounted to access the plumbing behind. In my case, the bypass valve itself had to be replaced.
