We paid over $6.00 a gallon in 2012!Re: Dawson cityHave stayed at Bonanza Gold a couple of times. Would stay there again. Goldrush also get good recommends.Re: Dawson City > Chicken > Tok AKSue has provided many great pics to this forum over the years. One spring she even arranged for a majestic elk to be standing beside the highway when we passed her place heading North! ;) We are indeed fortunate to be able to learn from her wisdom and experience. Maybe she will share her lynx video with us again in the future. Thanks Sue, for all you do for us "tourists"!Re: Dawson City > Chicken > Tok AKIf you want a really unique experience park in the wide spot of the road adjacent to the cut-off to 40 mile and take your towed out there to see the village that is being restored. If you are in the area Eagle has a pretty unique 4th of July parade!Re: Dawson City > Chicken > Tok AKWe've driven TOW several times with our Class A towing our pickup with no scares or near misses! I would not advise TOW when it is raining as the shoulders can be soft on the downhill side. Our best trip was one year in October when TOW was frozen. No dust, mud, or soft shoulders to deal with. The fall colors are spectacular a couple days after the first killing frost! We now know the meaning of "purple mountain majesties"! Plan on leaving Dawson or TOK early in the morning as the border checkpoint doesn't open until around 8:30. Leaving early helps avoid oncoming traffic! Dawson City is a definite do not miss location. Tons of history and old mine sites to visit.Re: Best time to goA lot depends on what you want to see and do. May-June less rain more animal sightings, better fishing for kings (if they open a season) more bugs and more tourists. August-September could be rainy could be dry and sunny, less animals, better fishing for silvers, better fall colors, less tourists, but possible snow and cold weather in the rockies. You might have to stay in one place for a couple of days while the snow melts. We've been there for four summers from mid May to mid September and have enjoyed the entire time each year. This year was pretty wet in the summer but we managed to find things to do to keep us busy. An besides it hardly ever RAINS in Alaska. Usually it is a drizzle or something less than .25" a day. Read the blogs, read the brochures, and check the historical weather reports and make your decision around what you want to see and do. No one can really say what would be best for you!Re: Advisability of late summer Alaska drive up mockturtle wrote: It tends to be rainier later in the summer. I agree that is the normal trend but this past 10 days has been "Chamber of Commerce" weather days. Bright sunshine, no clouds, light winds, with temps in the upper 60s! Other that the week of July 4th this has been the best weather all summer for us.Re: Advisability of late summer Alaska drive upI can only speak for 2016 and 2018. We did Taylor/Top of the World in 2016 the second week in September and the road was frozen but no snow. So it was perfect travelling. Spent one night on the side of the road on Top of the Road in the snow but bynon the next day everything was great. This year we are still in Valdez and the temp is currently 63 at 6:00pm! So far so good. IT's a roll of the dice this late in the season for snow. I don't think you have to worry about getting snowed out and having the spend the winter in the Canadian Rockies, BUT, be prepared to wait two or three days for a storm to blow through and the roads to clear. Probably not much help but that is what we have experienced, anyway. Many campgrounds close after Labor Day but there is usually spots available in the places that are still open. Parks here in Valdez are running about 25% currently.Re: Alaskan WeatherThis is our 4th summer in Alaska and I have to say this has been the wettest one yet. The good thing is it usually doesn't rain all that hard so with a rain jacket and a good hat we can continue exploring the sights and sites! Good luck with your animal spotting in Denali. We had a fantastic week at Tek in July seeing all the "Big 5" plus the mountain was out several days. The cool wet days will bring more activity from the animals which should increase your sightings! Enjoy it while you can and remember at least it is not 100+ here in Alaska!Re: Roll Call Alaska 2018 GeeWillakers wrote: Leaving in 9 days. Are chains required to be carried? No.
