Richard, doesn't sound like that dog was trying to harm you - from what you described, sounds like it was protecting itself the only way it knew how. A dog intent on harming gives warning signs - that one didn't. Rabies are unlikely, but the shots are a good precaution.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}Just a thought - you can ask the vet for advice - but with the foot bandaged so often, it may not be exposed enough to the air to heal properly. Perhaps there is a bandage that you can use that allows air to get to the wound.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}Hi Richard - unless there is swelling or puss coming from the wound, I wouldn't worry about putting him back on antibiotics. I am wondering if all of the swimming is keeping the wound from healing properly. You may want to keep it as dry as possible and exposed to the air until it heals completely - not sure how you would do that with swimming everyday. Don't let the locals discourage you. Perhaps they did try - and failed, however, I'm sure they didn't have the backing (lots of emotional and a little financial) that you have to keep you going. I'm sure their efforts never made the newspaper or got an official day honoring a rescue animal. Rather than trying to discourage you, I hope they see this as an answer to their prayers and they will join in your efforts - with success this time.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story} lynno62 wrote: Sorry to rant, I am just so frustrated with Mickey and trying to get her to not potty when I am gone. I can not yell at her as it is not her fault when she had to go she went, and is used to that, I just do not know what to do. Lynno - have you tried crating her while you are gone? Dogs do not like to "go" where they sleep. Even if she never house trains, this will keep her from making a mess in your house. They make crates for any size dogs now.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}Regarding the Friends of Ole Fella webpages: My vote is for either 1 or 3 - both look about the same.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}Please keep posting the animal antics - I'm laughing so hard I'm crying! (Someone pass the Kleenex.) I've got cats (rescue) and dogs (rescue) also, and I LOVE to get one over on my cats.:BRe: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story} Dixie Flyer wrote: Does anyone have any suggestions for a bad skin condition. Old Fella has to be bathed just about every three days or he begins to smell. He is on an antibiotic three times a day but doesn't seem to help. I have been bathing him with a shampoo the kennel recommended and that does help and Old Fella doesn't mind the bath in the shower with the warm water, it is just so messy. Water all over the place and then he shakes and that puts water all over the walls and everywhere else. Maybe he will have this allergy the rest of his life, I don't know? Does anyone have any suggestions?? We used to have an older dog with some type of skin condition. Nothing seemed to work until we started giving her a Vitamin E pill every day. I don't remember the dosage - 400 IU should be fine. We'd stick it in a bite-size piece of hotdog - she'd swallow it whole. Within a month her coat was beautiful and the skin condition cleared. You would need to continue it as a daily supplement even after the condition clears up.
