I have to get on my knees and put ear next to converter to hear it. So, I unplugged shore power let it sit for couple hrs. Plugged back to shore power and now the converter is very quiet and at converter the volts read 14.7 and at batteries read 14.6. And now every time I check voltage there is only .1 difference between bats and converter (currently, con is 13.6 and bats 13.5 Did the converter "burn" itself in as Randy said it would and now it is performing correctly. Waiting for him to call back.Re: Converter problem ?I just had the same symptoms happen to me. Ended up being the converter. I just used my generator for charging batteries and finished trip. If no generator, you could go to town and get a reasonable battery charger to keep batteries charged and worry free for rest of trip.Re: new power max converter, problems1600 generator: It is a coleman powermate 1600 sport and it is rated at 1300 and surge at 1600. I have 2 RV deep cycle les schwab batteries and they are brand new. I left trailer on shore power all last night and today with no load. volts at batteries and converter are 13.17.Re: new power max converter, problemsi did not read your posts before leaving and pulling the batteries down. Batteries are brand new and fully charged So, here is another voltage test (probably getting boring). The batteries are now at 12.14 volts. Turned on shore power and volts at output are 14.48 and at batteries 13.38. fan kicked on at about 4 mins and ran for about 1 min then shut off and volts at output read 13.6 and read 13.3 at battery. Things seem to be working fine, I think. Other than the voltage drop. I will be using generator for charging most of the time. Small gen is a 1600 watt and big gen is a 3500 watt. I will be using 1600 mostly and using 3500 when I need air conditioner. What changes do I need to do for charging with generator.Re: new power max converter, problemsOk. as of now, after running lights and heater for almost 4 hrs this mourning and hooked to shore power, the voltage reads 13.08 at converter and 13.04 at batteries. This voltage has basically stay the same for the 4 hrs. When I unplugged from shore power the voltage read 12.65 at converter and 12.73 at the battery. I will now drain the batteries for a few hrs and see what voltage does. Any other ideas need doingRe: new power max converter, problemsThis mourning the voltage at output side of converter is 13.17 and at batteries voltage is 13.16. I am assuming that when I start putting a load on batteries and battery charge goes down then I will still see the voltage drops (as I did last night) when converter is trying to charge. The wire size from converter output to batteries are 6 gauge I will check connections, wiring and etc for voltage drop.Re: new power max converter, problemsI left every light on and heater going in trailer for about 2.5 hrs with no shore power just batteries. Came out and battery voltage was 11.8 and lights heater still working fine. Turned on shore power and voltage on output of converter was 14.6. Stayed 14.6 for about 15 mins then went down to 13.6. Voltage at battery was 12.2 Kept checking voltages every time converter fan came on and went off. First voltage check output side went back up to 14.6 and battery at 13.1. Fan stayed on for probably 5 mins. When fan turned off Voltage on output side went to 13.54 and battery to 13.12. Now the voltage on output is holding at 13.54 and battery is holding at 13.12. And that's with lights and heater on. I think it's working good. Thanks for all the help and I will leave running all night and check in mourning with report.Re: new power max converter, problemsTalked to Randy at best converter today. He said the blue wire is positive and white is negative. So, I hooked it up correctly. He also said that the 14.7 volts is normal and after 15 mins the volts will drop to 13.6. He also said the humming is normal and will get less and less within the 15 mins and will be gone before 20 mins. He said it is burning itself in and all is good. So, I turned shore power on and hooked up batteries and let it run. Voltage started out at 14.7 and at 15 mins it was at 13.6. Voltage at batteries read 13.47 (a little drop probably cause converter is about 15 feet from batteries I am guessing). Also the humming kept getting more quiet as time went on and at approx 18 mins the humming was gone. Everything Randy said would happen actually happened. Now, I will start loading the system and see what happens and report backRe: new power max converter, problemsRj, Randy recommended both the PM and the PD. He did not try to sway me either way. He said they are both good units. It was my choice all the way.Re: new power max converter, problemsBFL13, why would it read 14.6ish when first turned on if the batteries are disconnected and no load of any kind.
