Cataloochee is my favorite area in GSMNP. Last time there was 2018 in our Wrangler. We came in from the south side. Only saw tents, pop ups and class B in the CG. The problem I see is that the roads are narrow and have places that would be difficult when meeting on coming traffic. Especially the downhill section when entering the park which was gravel the last time we were there. I know that I could get our 26 ft class c back there as long as I didn't meet anybody. I would recommend staying at Smokemont and taking the Jeep to the valley. September is a great time to see the elk. Clydes in Waynesville is a good place to eat.385Views0likes0CommentsRe: MA, NH, VT
Near Londonderry VT is Winhall Brook COE. Very nice campground. The south side has W/E site. Getting to the south side you have to make a 90 degree turn onto a one lane bridge. We had no problem in 26 ft Class C with a Wrangler in tow. I would check the reviews and Google maps to see if your rig would fit. Forgot about tire pressure. Running 65 front and 70 rear. Starting out at 70 and 80 which was way to much. Best thing is to weigh the rig and look up pressure for your weight. Then adjust pressure to where it feels right. I believe for my weight the PSI was a couple pounds lower. I have done both the Hellwig sway bars and the Sumo springs on a 2016 25B. Put both front and rear sway bars on at 5K miles. Really made difference when being passed by big trucks. I describe it as going from a shove to gentle push. Installed Sumo springs this summer at 38K miles before a trip to Vermont. With the Sumos when a truck passes there is still a push but more like a nudge. Where I notice the Sumos most is there is less side to side rocking when turning in and out of parking lots and other places at slow speeds. The wife says the ride is better when sitting back in the coach. When at the camp site you do not get as much bounce when moving in the coach. As for smoother ride over rough road, after driving thru WV and MD interstate construction, they didnt seem to help much.651Views0likes0CommentsRefrigerator won't light at higher elevation
This has happened on 4 trips, in 2016 in the North Carolina Mountains and in Wyoming and Montana and in 2019 and 2021 on trips to Colorado. The igniter sparks and there is gas, put it doesn't light. You can light it by hand. All of the other gas appliances work fine. What is odd is that when you get out of the mountains it works fine. For 3 years it lit every time we switched to gas. I know the air has less oxygen at elevation, but wouldn't the water heater and stove have the same problem lighting. The only thing I can see is the refrigerator is more exposed to the outside. We brought a 25B new 5 years ago. The reason we picked this floor plan was basically the reasons you gave. We have not had any problems with it. Have made several 2 to 3 weeks trips around the country. Did do the heavier sway bars and Sumo spring upgrade to improve handling. It is on the 350 chassis with a V8. We tow a Wrangler and just made a trip to Colorado. It did fine on the passes, just let it gear down and the engine rev. We have a Yeti type cooler that we set at the foot of the bed that we use as a step to make getting in and out of the bed easy. The only thing that I would do different would get the 450 chassis. With the Minnie loaded to travel with the wife and I, weight is around 12k, leaving only about 500 lbs to GVWR. The extra 2000 lb from the 450 would allow you to carry more passengers and cargo.1KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Colorado Campgrounds
Thanks for the help. Just got back from a 15 day trip to Colorado. Stayed at Snowy Peaks in Buena Vista and United Campgrounds in Durango. Both were shady and clean campgrounds. Staff at both were very friendly and helpful. Would recommend them to anyone looking to stay in those areas.476Views0likes0CommentsWolf Creek Pass Which direction
Planning trip between Durango and Salida. Traveling in a C gasser towing a Wrangler. Have driven the RV in western mountains before but not over Wolf Creek Pass. Know about lower gears and engine braking. Want to know if one direction is better for travel than the other or about the same? I have done both routes in our 26 ft class c. If you are comfortable driving in the mountains, 441 should not be a problem. Just use a lower gear and watch your brakes. IMO the NC side is steeper and the TN side more curves. Traffic from Gatlinburg to I 40 can be bumper to bumper at times. On I 40 there is an area that is 55 MPH with large trucks limited to the right lane and 50 MPH. A concrete barrier median separates east and west bound lanes. I have gone thru when the trucks will stack up and slow things down but it moves along. Google maps street view shows the area around the TN/NC really well. If I wanted to see the park or Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, I would take 411. If I just wanted to get to Knoxville, especially on a weekend, I would take I 40.648Views0likes0Comments
